Go Pro Karma is back

Just got a mail from B&H that Go Pro Karma is back.

It is priced same at $1099 with Hero 5 and Gimbal and $799 without hero 5.

What do you guys predict? Will it be able to fight with DJI? Earlier it had offered a Hero 5 to people who had ordered the Karma and followed the refund procedure. Will that lead to loyalty?

One can only speculate.

Since then DJI has come out with, not only the Mavic, but also the Phantom 4 PRO which is VERY nice, albeit not as portable. We'll see.......

If the 3DR Solo is any indicator, it is a very tough market to make a dent in. Coupled with an initial botched roll out and I think its uphill, but I wish GoPro the best. If I needed one action camera that I could take underwater, running or riding, and fly in the air, the Karma with a GoPro 5 would be the strongest candidate for an all in one system.

I do have the 3DR Solo and it works great. However, it needs a stable surface to take off. The new Go Pro Karma can take off from a boat. Philip Bloom writes that his Mavic Pro needed some 10 mins of waiting for the boat to be stable before it could take off. Anyway great technologies. Since the 3DR folded up within a year, I am not sure if Go Pro Karma can hold up against the onslaught of DJI. I hope it doesn't become a monopoly.

The Inspire 2 fully kitted up at the moment is out of budget. And who knows DJI may release inspire 3 next year.

Since the Go Pro 5 works without the housing, I am planning to get one. Has anyone got a Hero 5 black yet?

I have the hero 5 Black. Love it! I especially like the linear FOV and flat color curve options. I just wish linear FOV was available in 4K but hey, at least I have 4K 24P so that makes me happy. The touch screen is a bit fiddly (if you are used to an iPad touch screen quality) but it's nice to access menu functions without having to press the menu button 1000 times to access settings. Honestly, if the Karma flew REALLY solid and I felt it was on par with the Phantom I'd get it. It IS indeed an interesting solution for air, land, and sea. I've just had such nice results with DJI stuff (I don't have a Mavic) that it is hard to ignore. I hope that someone does compete with DJI. It makes the market much more interesting.

Being a one-product company is always a struggle. The sports camera market has matured. It was a good idea and now it is a commodity, which make it difficult to find profits (I just bought a 4k clone for $40, works great). Finding the next successful idea is nearly impossible, unless you have a genius leader. Going into the drone market, while a natural fit, is going from one commodity to another. Good luck finding profits in the drone market, much less become a leader in that market.

The road will be very bumpy for GoPro for the foreseeable future. I will be impressed if they return to profitability.

As someone who neither owns a GoPro or a drone, it's tempting. You get the GoPro, drone and hand held stabilizer for around the same price as a Mavic.
That said, I could just get a phantom 3 with 2.7K camera for less than half the price. I don't produce any final video in 4K anyway. That's probably the option I'll go with since I'm just getting into it. Plus those off-brand GoPro look-a-likes are like $80 and seem pretty comparable.
