Go India - shot with A7s

That was incredible, Question though, with the moving shots did you use sliders or gimbals?

I'm considering travelling and have this question in the back of my mind; would love to know what gear was used.

I'm inclined to think a gimbal would be easier as the tripod/slider combination is a lot of gear to carry and far more awkward to set up in busy environments.

Apparently you've done this before.

I was surprised at the sudden flashes of moire from the A7s.

Ya a lot of it I shot at 60p so it does creep up. It's not as bad on the original, but after compression it did show a lot more.

That was incredible, I get so caught up in all the camera tech, it's beautiful shots like yours that remind that in the right hands the tech is already great! Question though, with the moving shots did you use sliders or gimbals? And I know you mentioned PP 4, so no slog? Also what settings for PP would you suggest for the A7Sii (I just upgraded too)

I didn't use any stabilization. I shot it all handheld and stabilized in post. It is a lot better now with the A7s ii. I am getting less shake.

I did not shoot slog. I have done some tests and although slog seems to hold more dynamic range, from my tests it seems to only matter when the highlights are where you want the bulk of the information. Most of the time I want more information in the mids and slog seems to strip away the data from other parts in order to retain the highlights.

Back to stabiization, I do shoot with a flycam sometimes, but I find that filming off the cuff lends itself more to shooting without rigs. I hate taking time to set them up and I love to shoot fast getting in and out. I find I get better shots that way.

Thanks so much to everyone for the kind comments, I really appreciate it!

I'm in India now myself. Brought my a7s and only the Sony E-mount 16mm pancake lens. How's that for traveling light?! :D

Gives an awesome vignette on full-frame (because it doesn't cover it properly) but means I have to pack almost no gear in my tiny 35L pack.

I threw in my metabones adapter though as well (wrapped in a sock) and will be borrowing a 24-105mm (my go-to in the states) when I shoot the documentary I'm here for later this month. It's about an indigenous tribe's 1000-year old permaculture techniques. They're way out in the farthest northeast corner of the country (thankfully, it's over 100-degrees everywhere else I've been this time of year!) and will take a voyage to get to.

Thanks for sharing an inspiring piece that seems to match the flavor of the past week or two I've been here.

Damn, that sounds like a really cool trip. Enjoy and would love to see the outcome!

So after traveling to LA I brought my camera along and shot some stuff and it was fun but man I was carrying to much gear again haha. Going to have to jump to one of the sonys with stablization and cut down on the lenses. WHen you shot this where you using the full frame or crop mode?

Ya, travelling light is sometimes better for sure. I shot everything at full frame.

Terrific work. This is exactly the kind of stuff I like shooting. I went to Thailand recently and did the same thing with an a7s. Haven't had time to edit yet but I hope it turns out as good as yours. I just picked up an a7sii and am doing the same thing in the Caribbean again.
I'm really surprised you weren't using a gimbal. You just held the camera as steady as possible while moving and used warp stabilizer?
Who was the little girl? She added a lot visually, all the different locations with her were great. How long were you over there? And how long did it take you to edit?

Would love to see it when you cut it together!

Thanks for the kind comments. It's now how I make my living so I have been getting pretty good at keeping a camera stable without a gimbal. I keep a stretchy neck strap and pull on it to keep the camera as steady as possible. Most of the movement is from the legs. The girl is my daughter. Her and my wife frequently act for my pieces. We were there for around 5 weeks and I edited it for around a month over a long while since projects have been piling up.
