Well, I have been looking at a bunch of different stabilizing handheld mounts over the past month and finally decided to get the Glidecam (2000 Pro). I have been doing a lot of handheld stuff outdoors (and will be doing more in the future) and I was really looking for something to help "smooth" out the movements.
So far, it hasn't been so bad, especially reading all of these horror stories of folks trying to balance their cameras/mounts. I think part of my comfort in this comes from having to balance telescope imaging mounts for so many years. But the real trick is to balance one axis at a time, then fine tune it all at the end.
Anyhow, this is pretty cool to use. It definitely takes a lot of practice and getting used to how it works. But even so, I was able to run up and down stairs, walk across some rocky terrain, and work my way around some tight hallways with the resulting footage being very smooth with no jerks or detectable step movements at all.
I think I will be getting the accessory harness (pod) soon, though. As long as I keep my arms close in, it isn't too bad, but your arms will get a workout.
Something like this is something I would definitely recommend to anyone who is thinking of doing a lot of handheld work. It will completely change the appearance of your shots.
