Glidecam 4000 - User Settings

Hi Everyone,

My first post. I just got my 100B (and GC4000) this week and I've spent quite a bit of time here trying to see other DVX / GC4000 users experience with the combination.

(Frankly, I should have come here prior to getting my hopes up that it would be easy to use...)

However, during my search, I couldn't find a consistent thread where multiple user's DVX/GC settings were shared.

So, those that have had success with the 4000, what worked best for you?

I've narrowed it down to between 1-3 plates (2-6 total) and can't seem to find a configuration that works SOLIDLY. I've had minor successes with each setup, but nothing I was "downright happy" with.

Just like many other posters, it seems to be so testy and finicky, that
I now ask you what are your ideal settings?

1. How many weight plates?
2. Where were they positioned? (in / out)
3. How long did you extend the pole? (approx inches)
4. Did it perform consistently?

Of course, I'm also a bit interested in doing a quick release mod, but haven't yet done my research, but suggestions are always welcome. If I need a particular tripod/head brand, I'm open for ideas..

Thank you all, and appreciate this great resource.

when you hold it, does it stand straight?

When you do the vertical drop test, how long does it take before it reaches full vertical?

Yes (and no).

I've had mixed (and similar) results with the drop ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 seconds..

That's the thing.. The reason I'm asking for # of weights & pole length, etc. is to find the ideal and most consistent configuration that is "least finicky."

And it really stinks when you remove the plate for hand-held use, because the holes aren't fixed and even when you put the camera back on, it's off again.

Gosh, I need to figure out how to do a quick release...

So I guess I'm looking for the best weight/length config that has had the best overall results. I can fine tune the rest.

You know how the Steadicam Merlin has the "cook book" for various camera models? Why doesn't the Glidecam have the same???

Here are a couple of pics with DVX showing what has been working great for me. (Notice quick release on top of 4000)

looks great.

4 weights (with quick release)

Please tell me more about your quick release.. what pieces exactly do I need to buy?

Keep in mind I only have a crappy $50 sunpak tripod at the moment - if that helps..

So I have to buy two pieces. One to put on the Glidecam, and one to permanently attached to my camera. Can I buy a third to attach to my crappy tripod?

Much appreciated!

I think you need to buy the bottom part again, along with the top part as part of the unit. I bought 6 of these to put on all my camera supports like monopods, glidecam, booms, etc. BTW, ask Glidecam folks for help. The sales rep is helpful. They want you ideally to have 18lbs of total weight including your camera. So if you need to add weights to get it to 18lbs, that is optimum. Once you have your proper weight plates set up, how about putting gaff tape on them to keep them in place. Not pretty but you could use black gaff tape.
