giving stills a "3D" look

i posted this in the FCP section but maybe it would be better suited here?

question:

i am starting to see this alot...still photos, or even freeze frames of video, that seem to have each image in the shot on a diiferent plane, so they appear to be separated by physical space.

anyone know how to do this? i assume it's a post effect, but is it?

thanks

Post an example.

yes. you can achieve this in aftereffects. but Marlene is right, you should probably post an example so we can better help you.

If you are talking about the titles for HBOs Carnivale right here EXAMPLE

Its all done in either after effects or a 3D program like Maya. I'm currently working on a similar project for a music video and we are using Maya to achieve that layered effect.

Wow! That was sooooooooo cool

But yeah, using after effects and adding another camera would pretty much do the job. Just set the diffrent pictures up in diffrent planes and swing the camera through it and you can pretty much get that look.
