Given a 9G budget, which camera would you buy today and why?

Santa told me to wait until NAB but am seriously considering a new addition to my camera family.
Currently have a 5D2, a 7D, and a growing collection of L glass.

On my radar for possible purchase are the Canon 1DX, the RED Scarlet and possibly even the Canon C100.

The 5D3 is not a contender IMHO, most people would agree that the video quality of the 1DX is what the 5D3 SHOULD have been.

Should I opt for the Scarlet, with its arguably better quality in RAW format, or stick with the versatile DSLR format, along with the limitations of the H264 codec?

Given that you have the L Glass and already have some great stills cams which could function as B cams, out of the choices you mentioned.... I'd go for the C100.

Short documentaries and corporate video mostly, though want to branch out into doing more narrative stuff.

You're not getting a Scarlet for $9k. Think double that at least.

Not quite true! prices have just been slashed. Scarlet brain can be had for just under $8000. But of course once you make it usable with batteries, reader, touchscreen etc, the price almost doubles:(

How about an FS700? (with an adapter for your L glass) - Or save for other stuff and get a 5D3, if you can get it for ~$3K

If you plan to shoot corporate videos, documentary work even TVspots the FS700 is excellent for that.
But if you want a more cinematic approach the Blackmagic Cinema could be the choise and use the additional money to equipments, as external batteries, rig, monitor.

I shoot similar material to you and also aready have a 5D II and a 7D. I plan to sell both and purchase a c100 and possibly a 6D. These are not my only cameras, but I see this as my easiest and most bang for the buck upgrade. I think these decisions weigh heavily on what you shoot but I think the C100 is going to be a huge hit for corporate work. Very much looking forward to shooting interviews without having to explain why I have a separate recorder...and having to sync up audio...etc, etc. For me, it really is the perfect camera. Until the next one comes out :)

+2 on the C100 + Atamos. It's the best bang for the buck right now. Based on the spec's, it seems like it would have most of the cinema potential of the C300 with Canon mount, but it's being sold mostly for event videography.
