Give me PROS and CONS on latest MAGIC LANTERN firmware!! Still got bugs?

The only thing that scares me is how it eats up at your memory card faster. Can someone give me a time difference with using ML and without? That would seal the deal for me, I didn't do it before because of some bugs but it looks like it seamless now. Thanks

Aside from the small files of ML in the cf card, I don't think it eats up your storage space. Just don't use the data rate change as there is no visible improvement in your image. Other than that the other new features are very useful and currently this version, (I'm running jan 26 version) is quite stable.

if the video improves on the canons, and ml is applied to it, ill definitely get that. for now, gh2 for me :)

For me, with the mosaic filter, the issues were "fixed", so I can still extend its usability. Besides, the OP already has a canon, just debating if ML is ok or not. It definitely is at its current state.

Can you please link me to the New ML, can't find it on wiki. Thank you

What if I never installed ML before? I am doing this for the very first time, you sold me on how stable it is now. 1 year of waiting, I might as well finally do it.

Ted, would you share the info on the PM here?
I think I have decided to load the ML on the 550d and the 5dMKII, but have nevere done this before...

Hello kostas,

I merely provided my email for instant messaging support in case Joejitsu encounters problems during installation.

My experience on installation is limited to the 5D only so I can provide information more accurately with regards only to the 5D.

So for first time installation, make sure the 5d has the latest CANON Firmware version 2.1.1 which can be downloaded at the canon support page.

actually i like canon's highlight handling but overall the image quality isnt there for me yet. if it reaches NX5n level of quality id definitely take a look at that.

ive hacked my 550d before i sold it and i never had a problem. love all the features it gave me. specially timelapse & histogram. i wish gh2 had the same hack!

I actually first saw ML in action on a 550D belonging to a DP friend based davao last year, never got to install it till now, due to the new features and better GUI.
On an off topic, do you have an entry for this years Cinema Rehiyon? :) I feel sad missing it this year since I'm still here in U.S. I think the next one will be in Luzon for 2013.

Mind sharing your knowledge with me, as well. Interesting in giving this a go.

Its really no rocket science just make sure you follow the instructions.

After you install the latest canon firmware 2.1.1 then install the ML unified "christmas" version from here:

http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/Release_2011Dec22

If you donate (any amount, and they deserve it ) you get the scripted post workflow for HDR video.

Follow the install guides.

For a preview of the steps I'm copy pasting from the included PDF the install steps for a first time install;

Step 1. Preparing your camera
∙ Fully charge your battery.
∙ Remove any accessories from your camera (such as battery grip or external flash).
∙ Use a simple SD/SDHC/CF card for first install (SDXC will not work).
∙ Make sure you have a card reader.
∙ Upgrade your Canon firmware:
– for Canon 550D / T2i / Kiss X4: upgrade to firmware 1.0.9.
– for Canon 60D: upgrade to firmware 1.1.0.
– for Canon 600D / T3i / Kiss X5: upgrade to firmware 1.0.1.
– for Canon 50D: upgrade to firmware 1.0.8.
– for Canon 500D: upgrade to firmware 1.1.1.
– for Canon 5D Mark II: upgrade to firmware 2.1.1.
∙ Rotate your mode dial to Manual (M) position.
∙ Restore your camera to default settings (Clear all camera settings, Wrench 3 menu)

Step 2. Installation
∙ Format the card from the camera (low level format).
∙ Unzip all the files from from Magic Lantern zip archive on the root of your card.
∙ Launch the Firmware Update process.
∙ If the screen goes black and card LED starts blinking, upgrade your Canon firmware
(see Step 1, even if you already have the correct version number) and try again.
∙ Once you see the green confirmation screen, restart your camera. Done.
∙ If something goes wrong, check the Troubleshooting section below.

...this instructions include screen grabs on the PDF to guide you better.
It also contain s the necessary disclaimers such as;

.***************************************************
* THIS IS DANGEROUS AND MIGHT DAMAGE YOUR CAMERA. *
* NO WARRANTIES. NO GUARANTEES. *
* *
* IF IT BREAKS YOU GET TO KEEP BOTH PIECES *
***************************************************
If you are not comfortable with this, stop reading and delete the software before you are
tempted to try running it on your camera.

..but so far no one came forward with a bricked camera so I'm confident that as long as you follow instructions and especially doing this on a full charged battery, you'll be fine.

After installing the dec 22 version you can now upgrade to the LATEST ML unified now currently at Jan 26 version from here:
