Gini Rigs Go Proprietary....

Update

Update

I just received my cage with the same problem. The picture he showed on the eBay auction is different as it still has those larger holes with less small holes. I am writing to him right now as he has a good reputation in supplying such great rig to me and also he amazingly accurate iFocus (Gini type Follow Focus) that I really like. Hate to ban him for something as small as "holes" issue. But it is a quality issue and I am going to have problem selling bunch of this cages later to my customers (I am a video reseller in Malaysia).

Thanks for the heads up even though it is a bit late by few days.

Gini didn't respond to my request for an 'old' top plate during the initial ebay 'item not as described' period. By that time I'd asked him 3 times, so I felt that I had no choice other than to escalate it to a an official Ebay dispute - hoping that Ebay might give him a nudge to send the plate.

A few hours later (with still no contact from Gini) my payment was fully refunded.

I was genuinely surpised - at no time had I asked for a refund, all I wanted was the plate. Ebay hadn't even had time to consider the matter, so the impetus for the refund came solely from Gini.

I'm not sure that I understand the Korean business model! - don't spend $10 sending a top plate by airmail, instead refund $180 (inc. shipping) when no refund had even been mentioned....

Now he's made *me* feel guilty!

1/4-20 Tap :-)

Easier said than done.

I do have some taps and dies - but I think they're metric sizes. I'm fairly handy, and have a reasonable amount of tools, but [a] I'd have to try and get an imperial size tap - which is not as easy as you think in the UK these days - and I'm still not convinced that there is sufficient metal adjacent to the holes to permit further drilling out. even if further drilling/tapping did work, you lose the anodised fnsh that make the threads hard wearing. For me, tapping the holes is very much second best - and, for many other purchasers it would be a complete non-starter.

So far, I've managed to use some brackets that I already had to mount two ball head Q/R units for the Zoom recorder and the monitor - fastening them to the cage via 10-24 bolts.

I've ordered two magic arms & 15mm rod fittings - which should allow me to mount the mics using the vertical rods that are part of the cage construction.

If it all pans out, my concience tells me to send Gini the cost of the cage, minus whatever I've had to spend to circumvent his non-standard holes.

EDIT - after a quick look on ebay (much to my surprise) 1/4 -20 BSW taps do seem to be readily available - other reservations notwithstanding.
