Gigs getting scrapped...

So I'm a bit annoyed, and I know it happens time to time, but I just had 3 weeks worth of work all scrapped within 3 days of shooting. What's most annoying is that I turned down jobs during the same time assuming I was going to be working.

I'm curious if anyone has some thoughts about protocol on these things... has anyone got signed commitments to these kinds of things? I understand s*it happens, but now I'm out 3 weeks of work from an already slow year.

and if I just sound like a whiny loser, feel free to tell me to shut up, haha :violin:

Unfortunately, that's the risk of th freelance world. As they say, it's great work... if you can get it.

Only protocol I know of is last-minute cancellation. If they cancel your work day within 24 hours, they owe you the day rate because the assumption is that you have turned down other work.

I had a post house here in Knoxville book me for an entire week of ProTools a coupe years ago (2nd shift, 5pm - 2am). They called me every day at 4:00 to say that the stuff I was supposed to be working on that night wasn't ready, so don't bother coming in. 5 days of that and I never got paid, and I had turned down other projects. When I raised the issue, I was told that if I didn't want the work, they'd find some one else to do it. I told them to go ahead, and never worked for them again.

Union gigs get half pay within 24 hours, and full pay within 12 hours (for a day).

For an extended gig like that you're probably just boinked... do you feel boinked? You should.

stlouisgreen owes me $1400 of half-price shooting for sh*t that I actually SHOT... they were steady business... all good and then suddenly I started to voice my concerns about the big bill they suddenly started piling up (at $2800 worth of work discounted to $1400... and still NO pay?)... so anyway... situations like that have turned me into a hard-ass about partial up-front, non-refundable deposits, etc.

Now if somebody has a great idea (and they aren't already a friend of mine) then I'm going to get something even just to talk to them about it.

Also... best advice ever... when somebody wants you to do a gig... and they go from talking pay to making you a partner? You won't be getting paid.

thanks for everyones insight, thankfully, i got some more gigs booked, so I'm feeling a little better.

This weeks issue: Production's giving me bounced checks...

Thanks B of A (Bank of A-holes) for letting me overdraft, and turning a 99 cent arizona iced tea into a $35.99 iced tea... haha
