Gigabit Network

I just set up a gigabit network by adding the network cards and gigabit switches using my existing cat5 cable from my old network (gigabit switch was only $50 and the cards are even less.)  It allows me to store full size clips from my DVX on my server and play them real time full res with no stuttering like before on my 100Mbit network.  I have a pretty fast laptop but the drive is only 60GB so I may try to render directly to the server in Vegas and compare the speed vs rendering locally on the harddrive on the laptop.

I timed the transfer of a large file from the server to my laptop and it took 1/5 the time on the gigabit vs. 100TX.  If I think of other ways this comes in handy like the "render to other workstation" feature in Vegas I'll let everyone know how it does.

Not sure if this will help anyone but I thought it was pretty cool.

Re: Gigabit Network

I rendered a 2.5GB file with no effects to the server and it took 3:11 to the server vs. 2:40 to my local hard drive.  Awesome, I will render directly to the server through a mapped drive for all my projects from now on.

I hope I'm not posting about something no one cares about! :)
