Giant Squid Stereo Mics - Thoughts?

Hey,

I shoot bands/musicians acoustically/away from the studio and currently have a Rode NT4 boomed into a Zoom H4N and combine that w/a Zoom H1 fed by a Rode Lav Mic. The Lav is for the singer so you end up with his vocals loud and clear so they don't get lost in the ambient feed.

I was having a look at the Giant Squid podcast stereo mic and was wondering how they'd compare to the Rode lav - either as a spare or second mic, maybe even a replacement.

I was wondering if stereo audio might be more useful for a singer, either simply as a stereo source or perhaps as giving me two options. I.E. I could play one capsule high up on the lapel and one more down his/her shirt so pick the best result.

Does anyone have any thoughts here? Cheers!

Well, that's not really stereo, just a two track recording. The mics aren't set up to record stereo.

Anyway, I don't see that it is all that necessary to do this. Vocals are usually mono, but if it's not a huge inconvenience to you, go for it. There are no hard and fast rules that say you can't do it.

The giant squid mics aren't bad, but I'm not convinced they're really worth their price, particularly the 'stereo' sets. They're a pair of $2 capsules (Panasonic wm61a) , a couple feet of cable, and a $1 Neutrik connector.

Can you recommend another stereo mic under $55? I'm really looking for one to do videos, podcasts & a stand-up comedy demo. Cheers

Are you looking for a stereo mic or a set of two lavs? Just because something is 2 channels, doesn't mean it has to be stereo.

From the (largely BS) description, that's two of the same elements used in the giant squid mics taped together into a giant lav. If you're okay losing the $20 if it sucks, go for it.

Stereo recording of a voice is really unnecessary, though. The squids would at least let you do the two differently spaced capsules your were talking about in your OP, but frankly, I think you just need to experiment more with what you have. Figure out what you need to to do get the result you're after. You've got 2 decent recorders, and a couple good mics, adding a cheap lav or two isn't going to fix bad technique.
