Ghosting issues

I frequently record video of theater performances with my HVX, and I consistently have ghosted images. I'm fairly certain it happens in regular light, but it is very noticeable in low light, especially when I'm photographing a bright object. In the attached shots, my camera is zoomed out completely, but it occurs at any zoom. Is this a problem HVX users have seen before, or is this unique to my machine?

Hmm...well that probably rules out just blurring from the shutter speed. Often images shot with a 1/24th of a second shutter can get this sort of look but at 1/48th, you should be fine as far as shutter speed. Were the subjects moving quickly or were they stationary?

Oh yeah, the obvious. Is this shot progressive or 1080i or 480i?

I can see the ghosting, just not sure what is causing it for you. Do you ever get this ghosting on exteriors or well lit shots?

I shot this at 720p 24. The subjects in these shots weren't moving particularly quickly, but the ghosting happens regardless of speed. Also, the ghost is always offset above them, so it's not any sort of motion blur.

As far as whether I've seen this with exteriors or well-lit shots, I can only attest to seeing it in these low light, high contrast shoots. That said, we had two other HVXs running during this shoot, and though they were in much tighter than my HVX, nothing of this sort showed up in their footage.

Where are you seeing the ghosting? In an NLE? If so, what are the timeline settings?

The reason I ask is that you might see that sort of thing on a 29.97 timeline if you're using straight 23.976 files.

I'm working with the footage in FCP 6.0 These grabs were done in the viewer window, but the same appears when placed on a 23.98 timeline.

Thanks

They all cut in to the rest of the footage from the shoot without any difficulty so they are without a doubt 23.976.

Incidentally, I have also seen the same distortion on 29.97 footage on a 29.97 timeline.

Another HVX owning friend has said that they have seen similar distortion when using a Filer (UV) and a wide angle adapter when the lens is at it's widest. This footage however was shot without anything in front of the lens, so it does not seem particularly applicable.

If the other HVXs on the shoot are not having this issue, I would take this HVX in to Panasonic or a authorized Panny service center and have the lens and optical path checked out. It doesn't look like internal or filter related anyway and if you are shooting bare-lensed, than you have eliminated those as a variable.

Stupid question, have you carefully cleaned the lens?

If it were mine, it would take a trip to the shop. There is no reason it should make ghost images like this.
