The sad thing is, most people see movies for purely entertainment value and nothing more. Why else would people skip out on great flicks to see the lowest common denominator?
When I saw the trailer for ghost rider, I just knew it was going to be the biggest crap out there. I was actually surprised by a friend who really was excited about the trailer, telling him "are you serious?".
I saw the reviews for it right away and my suspicions were correct, and critics were comparing it to catwoman (which I make fun of even though I've never seen either).
But then I hear it's the number 1 movie in Canada (and I'm assuming in the US as well)!? WTF!?!
Meanwhile how much did a movie like Pan's Labrynth make? It wasn't in a lot of theaters, but it was advertised with the fact that it had 6 oscar nominations, and is top of critics lists. Looking on rotten tomatoes, looks like it made a total gross of 30M. Whereas Ghost rider, just out for a single week, made 52M already...
There's something majorly wrong here when something nominated for 6 academy awards makes far less money than a crap movie with a guy with a flaming skull...
It could have been good though. Not a work of art, but it could have been a great heavy metal movie. I hope they don't f&%k up the Wolverine movie like this.
Most people are just looking for an escape though. They don't want to go see a kid's movie that'll keep them up at night. But it's astounding at the things that some people think are good...I pissed off a friend of mine when I told him he had no taste. It was because he thought The Cave looked good. Then The Descent came out...same concept, but well-executed. It's a shame how some people can't tell.
um comic books nor their movies are really geared towards grown men who nitpick about frame rates, depth of field, - the meth trailer -...they're made for wide-eyed kids.
And all this time I thought they were made for the people who like to read comic books. I've always thought comic books were as close to a movie as a static form can be.
Aren't they out of comic books/graphic novels to pillage yet? I remember a time not too long ago when you couldn't get a comic book movie made at all. Now there is a never-ending stream of these mediocre super-hero films assaulting me every few months.
