GH5 GH5S versus EVA1...

Ha ha I meant RAW which is the main reason to upgrade...it's shitty and cropped...check it yourself ;-)

You do realize what raw is and why it has to be cropped? You can’t scale raw. The nature of raw is it is an untouched output of the raw sensor data. Scaling requires processing. If the EVA or URSA or any other raw camera offers 4K or 2k it is cropped. The exact same is true of the Alexa. The sensor is 3.2k for open gate but many of the shooting modes are in fact cropped. For example any 16x9 mode is 2.8k.

If you don’t want to shoot cropped with raw then you need to take the full 5.7k raw and process and scale in post. That’s the way it works with raw or else you no longer have raw. Scaled raw can no longer be raw but a weird processed conversion into something new.

The reason the URSA can do ProRes at 2k or 4K is because ProRes requires processing and it is no longer raw data. Therefore it can be scaled as part of that process.

Not a EVA limitation but a limitation of working in a raw world with higher resolution sensor cameras.

In "A Fistful of Dollars, the argument was settled, but EVA1 vs GH5(s); the comparison doesn't belong. Completely different shooting styles sharing only a great image in common. Might as well forget DR too. People ridiculed Alan Roberts for reporting GH5(s) achieved 14.6 stops DR measured in accordance with EBU Tech 3335; there is NO authority for any camera without his.

In the end the real questions are:

Do YOU like the image you are getting from the camera lens combo you are shooting with?
Do YOU like the way the camera lens combo handles is it intuitive and not get in the way?
Because in the end that is what matters. Purely tech spec wise all these cameras come through the finish line.
I have shot projects on the 5dII, 7d, 1dIV, A7s and while in the end everyone was happy with the results I couldn't wait to get back to a real camera and once "grown up" versions of large sensor cameras under 20k became available have owned the C300 and FS7 and only used hybrid cameras as a side kick. the gh5 and the GH5s are the first cameras of their kind that work for me as they are. When the project is shot and edited and everything falls into place no one sits there and says thats good but the other camera would have been better.

Right. But see what's happening, people are opining, "Why get the EVA1 when I can have the same PQ with the GH5s?" Then follows a response a bit defensively, "The EVA1 is better spec'd" and then points to said spec."

It's a silly premise; dueling cameras. You want to get back to "grown up" cameras. I get it, for the sheer art of entertainment I'd rather be shooting 16 bit raw with my F55 and CineAlta PL cinema primes but the reality is, it's not the right toolset for what I'm paid to do at this moment, the right tools being not 1 but 2 cams, slung on my hip. That's why I state the case for GH5/GH5s, not specs or IQ in isolation.

Yes, getting to the finish line.

This is the first thing I've ever seen written on this forum - that truly makes me semi-interested in the GH5 or the S model. (although not sure I'm thanking you - since I do not need another camera at the moment & don't need to start looking). I too bought & still use my FS7 & never enjoyed the dslr days - not because of IQ - but because of the lack of ND/XLR, etc and ergonomic issues. Maybe one day, just maybe now that we've seemed to reach a threshold with most camera makers, all the other stuff besides IQ will get more attention from the engineers / designers.

Just to be clear: do I prefer the image I am getting with the GH5 and a 25mm Voigtlander to my FS7 with an Otus 55mm on a speedbooster? No (although in REC709 maybe)
But I am shooting a Series right now all handheld all shot in back alleys of places like Mexico City and Rio I leave the Hotel in the morning and we return late at night I have a small bag with me with 3 primes one camera all the batteries for the whole day and Audio and the whole thing weighs less than one FS7 body. I would want any other camera for this job.

I understand fully, completely. I just shot a bunch of doc-style video using my a6300 instead of my Fs7 for almost the exact same reason (and we're talking 420 custom profile here). Nothing but scratch audio involved, lots of running around with a backpack & small tripod in rather industrial settings with little time. Did it look as good as CineEI on the FS7. No. Was the client happy? Yes. As Tom said above - sometimes "it's not the right toolset for what I'm paid to do at this moment".

They match very well in color profile, although the available V-Gamut on the EVA1 is wider than that of the GH5S.
It is not a problem that the gamut of the GH5s is smaller but is the sensor data translated correctly into the V-Gamut color space?
It is clear that is not the case for the GH5 because the colors when interpreted as V-Gamut, are over saturated.

I couldn't comment because the GH-series cameras are part of the consumer line. I'm just not familiar enough with the product.
