GH5 GH5 with speedbooster better than my experience with A7r2 and Speedbooster

'Theoretically' I liked the idea but I don't use my EF-E-mount speedbooster on my A7r2 because I found optical performance at the outer edges of the frame was compromised. Resolution drops off and it looks like it's due to the focus field curving in rather rapidly. Works fine for shooting a central foreground subject that you want to isolate against a background blur but for say an establishing wide shot with lots of detail it's not so good. Has anyone experienced this with the M43 version on a GH5 either the .64 or .71? I'm thinking that the .71 may be a bit more forgiving as it doesn't pull the edges of the lens coverage so close to the sensor extremities? I've not got any APS-C EF lenses - it's all full frame that I use for stills but which I'd like the option of using occasionally.

with FF lenses likely not since the crude corners of the lens are still cropped off a bit. APS-C lenses with a SB and m43 might show more imperfections around the edges since the SB turns the camera into a APS-C camera. With that said a ton of people use the Sigma 18-35 on the GH5 with no problem at all.

Which lens were you using on the Sony and at what F stop? Not all FF lenses are created equal and the F stop can also greatly affect the quality of the edges.

Lenses which have near perfect corner and edge performance on full frame showed the same edge and corner problems when used in APS-C mode with the speed booster. It's a problem with the speedbooster - bad sample or design?

The Metabones Speed Boosters, although apparently the best of the breed, are far from optically perfect. I see the same issues on my EF-M43 Speed Booster, and I'm using full frame lenses almost all the time. Supposedly the newer Tantalum glass versions are better controlled, but I've yet to see a perfect speed booster from any manufacturer. It's a market ripe for some competition! Would be awesome if a proper lens manufacturer got in the game with optical quality as their number one priority.

Cheers,

Paul :)

Thanks - that's saved me £600!

This is exactly why I sold my metabones speedbooster. All of my Nikon AIS lenses hard horrendous field curvature. I could never keep things on the same plane in focus across the entire image. Drove me nuts. Admittedly, I rencently purchased the RJ adapter for 100$ just to see how it would play with my gh4.
