GH5 GH5 V-Log View Assist Playback

Interesting, if the FS7 and Alexa also omit this feature there must be some reasonable rationale. I’m curious as to what the technical challenge is.

The V-Log file is written to the card without the LUT applied, for obvious reasons. To have it reapplied on playback would require further processing, which seems like a waste of resources. It either looked good going in (and mostly for clarity rather than color correction) or it didn't.

Yea, I think it comes down to processing power. The GH5s has this feature but it has less processing to do. I wish it was a simple fix.

Maybe you’re right and the additional processing just doesn’t seem warranted for most folks. What if it could be turned off to save resources? If you’re reviewing footage where you didn’t have the opportunity to be behind the camera during the shoot, or if you’d just like to double check something, having the opportunity to review with a LUT could be advantageous for some. I would certainly like to have this feature.

Once recorded, the camera doesn't know if a file is V-Log L or not, any more than it knows a file is Cine-D or Natural or Standard profile. The profile could be recorded as metadata and that could be acted on, but that's not currently the case.

Hi there,
Once in the playback menu, you can hit the display button to bring up the clip’s metadata. On my GH5 this metadata includes the picture profile (including V-Log L). This may not be enabled by default though, I’m not sure.

It appears this could be added via firmware if the camera is able to do it...it was for the URSA Minis (LUT monitoring in general was and you could apply a LUT during playback).
