GH4 GH5 + SB w/ SIGMA 18-35mm Autofocus test

I don't know where this idea comes from that continuous auto focus is somehow feasible for video.

I think for video you should either focus manually or set autofocus once and make a shot, set it again and make another shot etc.
Whatever system you use continuous autofocus will never be good enough.

And obviously focusing through the speed booster is always slower than with native lenses.

I totally agree. I was so pissed people bashed the GH5 because of its autofocus capabilities. Its a freaking awesome camera. But now its time to compare it to my previous camera the micro cinema camera.

Unfortunately people compare everything if there is one example that does it better and then assume everything else is complete crap. There are some Sony cameras that apparently have really good continuous auto focus so that means people get to bash the GH5 if it isn't as good.

I agree with you however that continuous auto focus is a ridiculous thing to worry about. It is yet another lazy tool so people don't have to have any skill shooting. I started off shooting with ENG cameras in 96' and there was no auto focus at all. We shot everything from war protests, news, weddings, dance recitals, documentaries, street interviews you name it and never complained about the lack of auto focus. When I bought a Canon XL1 it had auto focus but I never used it. I developed the skill to manually focus because I had to and never really looked back. Anybody who thinks they must have continuous autofocus to pull off a certain type of shoot is full of it. If I can do it so can they.

Sure it is a nice tool to have but by its core definition continuous auto focus is a lazy tool so people no longer have to have skill. Anything auto was designed to take the place of skill so people didn't have to be an expert in using the camera. If a consumer wants to use the GH5 to shoot their kids at the beach I can totally understand the desire to have really good continuous autofocus but those users are not the ones so vocal about the GH5 auto focus.

I think it probably comes from actually using it successfully on sets for years to achieve shots that might not be possible otherwise.
