GH5 GH5 Ronin S no focus control in VFR while recording

I am new to the GH5 was hoping to use it as my gimbal camera, but I have found that I cannot control the focus while recording in VFR. The focus wheel on the Ronin will control the focus while recording in normal real time mode, and even when I have it set to VFR it will adjust focus on standby, but when I hit record the wheel does nothing & the focus stays locked.

Everything has latest firmware using a 15mm 1.7 Leica kens.

Any suggestions?
 
I haven't found great value with these focus wheels. IMOP they don't yield profession results if you're intending to pull focus because they're fly by wire lenses.

In addition the dof is so large with wide angle lens on a micro 4/3 sensor not sure why you'd need to adjust the focus. For tracking shot, either use auto focus or leave it set to manual focus maintaining the same distance from the subject. You will have a lots of room for error. Not like a full frame.

As I recall, there is nothing but manual focus at the lens in VFR on the GH5 when actually recording - will be glad if proven incorrect.
 
I use a DJI focus motor with the GH5 and strap a gear to the lens focus ring. Doesn't solve your exact issue but it's a workaround
