GH4 GH5 Owner / User Reports

Tough crowd. Tough Crowd

Not at all trying to be hard on anyone and always after constructive comparisons and posts! Can't speak for others but I personally was more just pointing out the reasons why a test like this doesn't carry very much meaning, but can often mislead people (not so much HERE as this is a pretty sharp crowd).

But I can make my GH5 look really, really different if I shoot default profile with a blah kit lens VS changing only to a high quality optic and spending 60 seconds dialing in my profile settings.

Because really, I'd be very interested in a well shot A7SII vs GH5 comparison video. We all know far too well how dramatically different any camera can look depending on settings and glass. It's why pre GH5 launch people were like a rollercoaster with every clip that came out.

I have both the a7sii and gh5 - i have a speedbooster XL(gh5) and a metabones mark IV(a7s ii) and im using it with a tamron 24-70 VC 2.8. Since im using them on jobs i won't be able to do a full on comparaison videos but so far - Gh5 is much sharper, has less dynamic range(not by much), gh5 colors are better and is obviously not as good in low light WHEN YOUR NOT SHOOTING LOG. When your shooting log - they are both bad. With the gh5 i would not go over 3200, with the a7s ii , 12800 is my highest - again not in log. But most importantly for what i do - gh5 so far does not overheat when i do very very long 120fps takes.

Finally - they match well, but not perfectly. Don't expect to drop a LUT and both cameras match perfectly. There's a little bit of work if you want the a7sii and gh5 to match smoothly.

I'm finding the Sigma 18-35 actually vignettes on the wide end a bit more on the GH5 than the GH4, I'm guessing because of the sensor stabilization. On 4:3 photo you can really see it in the corners. 3:2 is better, and you don't see it in 16x9 modes.

EDIT: I should add I have the "S" version of the Speedbooster, so .71x.

Have you tried this with LEEMING LUTS to match GH5/A7S?

I have not. Will have to try.

As a side note for everyone, the focus transition tool works perfectly with the metabones speedbooster. If you work in fiction or commercial where you have time to setup a shot and have to work with razor thin depth of field - its a major game changer.

Also as previously stated - the ibis is insane and is much better then the 5axis in my a7s ii.(im using metabones for both)

For anyone in contact with Panny, a much needed feature is for the OIS Icon to display under or near it the focal length setting on screen. Have forgot to change this using manual lenses multiple times on a shoot today and the reminder would be infinitely helpful!

I've used the GH5 now for enough different events to have some thoughts/questions/recommendations.
1) Does anyone else have a problem with the monitor dimming after about a minute of camera inactivity while recording? I have all the sleep functions set to off and the brightness level set to 1.
2) With the recording button on top of the camera near ISO, this so far has proven trouble-some to me when shooting low-light situations. I'll reach up to adjust iso and accidentally hit the record button. I recommend turning off the record button and just using the shutter or moving the iso switch if you do a lot of low-light shooting.
3) The battery life in my experience is HALF that of the GH4. This is based upon three full days of shooting with the GH5 now, all of which are events I have shot with the GH4. Fortunately the batteries still last a decent amount of time in the GH5 and they are relatively cheap to stock up on.
4) I'm not using the joystick feature at all, but the focus pull feature is incredible...especially when using a slider.
5) The ISO really is better. I would say the GH5 easily gains a stop of low light performance in terms of grain when compared to the GH4.

Remember, there are additional features very seldom talked about that could perhaps assist you with the ISO issue. That is assigning functions to certain FN buttons even to the joystick. Just a thought.

Yes, I've assigned a lot of the custom buttons to fit the items that I most often adjust during a shoot. I could also experiment with capping the ISO level I am comfortable with and then just using auto-iso. I like keeping the ISO button in the same location since I am often shooting with GH4s and want to keep the muscle memory the same for some of these frequently used items.

Are you saying the entire monitor dims, or is it the disappearing screen info that happens on the GH4?

GH4 does this too. I believe it's a power-saving / LCD display saving feature. Touch any control to bring it back to life. ( I usually rotate the back-dial one notch to do this, I'm guessing the WiFi remote would do the same thing )

My understanding is that the 5-axis stabilizer is ALWAYS engaged, even when it's in the "OFF" setting it's simply holding the sensor still.
