GH4 GH5 - Is there a chance for a quick release of some different variants?

I think the GH5s is proving that the M43 format may be plenty enough in the future. There are rumors about further enhancements via organic sensors, etc. The next big hurdle for m43 is hitting 14 stops DR.

When that happens - and I am sure it will, one way or another - the format may be pretty locked in as more than sufficient for professional applications. Cameras will continue to get excessive amounts of lowlight performance and high ISO, ever increasing DR, etc. But I think we're at a point where extra DR and extra ISO become more icing and specialty features rather than compromises. Clean 14 stops DR, clean ISO 6400, 4k 60p 10-bit 4:2:2 and/or internal RAW/CinemaDNG/h265 etc.

At that point, and I see that within the next few years (ever increasing internal codec and FPS gains will be easy as mobile CPU tech is rapidly increasing with plenty of headroom left), I think it might make a lot of sense for Panasonic to re-introduce a pro-bodied M43 camera again. An AF200 that is basically a GH5s, with IBIS, with ND filters and good pre-amps and XLR, with a killer built in OLED 5.5" super bright display, that sips battery, has great internal codecs and FPS, and clean 14 stops DR and ISO 6400... for under $5000k... yeah, that would be a big hit I think.

M43 will never keep pace long term with S35 and FF (as the tech will continue to improve there, too) but I think it's getting to the point where it won't necessarily need to, and other things such as size/weight/stabilization/battery/etc. will become more highly desirable. I for one would love to see a 2019/2020 AF200.

Where things will get tricky again is if 6K or 8K acquisition becomes standard, then, you really need the larger sensor size (at least for the time being) due to laws of physics. But as long as 4K delivery maintains, m43 should suffice. And I think the shelf life on 4K will be very long... I just don't see most consumers getting into 8K home theatre setups, especially when the overall trend in size is going downward (lots of mobile consumption, land in major urban areas getting more expensive as population increases, etc. Who has room for 150" 8K setup? Not the vast majority). 4K, VR, and AR are likely where things are headed for a long time, and M43 should be a perfectly adequate format for a lot of work there in the coming years.

I think your pricing is too low. More likely it would be close to EVA1 pricing to ensure that Panasonic doesn't compete with itself. ( or an upgraded DVX200 camera )

I just assumed by that time there would be an EVA1s or EVA2! :)

When the time comes, I have a feeling Panasonic will be more interested in competing with Sony than itself... A7S III, FS5 mk II, FS9(?), etc.

Last time Sony played catch up, they played leap frog...

Seems its always that way. I expect GH5s and EVA1 to be "bested" this year, and vice versa. But who knows.

At least we're getting to the point where that doesn't really matter too much competitively anymore (I bought the HVX200a right before DSLR revolution... and then the AF100 right before the digital S35 revolution... ugh).

A bit of a non-sequitur, but did anyone else see the part in the Cinema5D interview when Yosuke Yamane-san, the head of imaging at Panasonic mentions that they developed both GH5 and GH5s at the same time and that he actually wanted to release the GH5s first?

He had to say this because he is too proud to admit that the idea came from this forum.
But sarcasm off: If this is the case, why they dont release the GH5, the G9 and the GH5s together, at the same time?
That would have been customer oriented, because everyone could decide if he is more into stills, in video or both.
Now everyone who bought a GH5 a few weeks ago for only video is dissapointed. And thats rightly!

No, not really.

That's on them.

We all knew something was coming out.

Sorry - better 3 month ago. But still annoying. Espacially if they developed the GH5s at the same time like the GH5 and wanted the GH5s to be released earlier. So the only reason to do it that way was to let people buy the GH5 and then the GH5s too. Ok, its a businesslike way. But not nice.

lol, that's not ideal.

ha! you're telling me

I think it would be ideal if they launched a GH6 and GH6s simultaneously, even from a business stand point. Those who may not have considered the GH5 due to lowlight may have considered the S, and made a decision to buy both for their pros and cons, etc. I don't think they will see many extra net sales from people who bought a GH5 and then decided they had to have the S. I am guessing the delay had more to do with the sensor from Sony not being ready for mass production a year ago.

I'm not entirely convinced it was solely just a bean counter decision to remove IBIS from the GH5s. Using the multi-aspect sensor puts the edge of the frame right at the image circle of the lens. Not a whole lot of room there to move that sensor around. Having a sensor that tight to the image circle will likely require stabilizing the sensor and lens together which means a gimbal. The GH5 has the extra space to compensate for since the video crop uses an portion of the image circle far from the edges.

Yeah it sucks but thats the price we pay for less crop and more light.
