GH4 (GH5) Is the V-log without external recorder issue gone in GH5?

I remember in GH4 the V-log without external recorder had some purple/green spots to the footage.. Is that issue gone in GH5??
Anybody shoot without external recorder and in Vlog can verify this?

It's fine even in 8-bit, although my test was at 4K60p. Haven't tried 8-bit 24p.

I see color shifts in a lot of those shots. The banding in the sky alternates from blue to magenta. And there are quite a few shots where objects that are clearly grayish in real life look alternately green or magenta, like the stone of the firefighters memorial. I hope it looks better in 10-bit.

You're kidding me. Sorry, but there is no color shifting or banding in that footage. You must have playback issues. Download the original file. On my 5K iMac the color is fantastic.

Yeah, the whole image is shifted towards magenta. I can also see some sky banding in a couple of shots. The other tests you link to in the description look fine, though.

They do look fine. And they were shot with the Natural profile. It looks as if, in 8-bit mode at least, V-Log-L still exhibits the problem as it did in the Gh4. Which is to be expected. 10-bit should look a lot better with V-Log-L.

What am I seeing at :57-:58. The big tree in the foreground seems to 'move'. I wasn't pixel peeping. It just jumped out at me as artificial movement. Viewing on a notebook. Does anyone else notice this?

Are you referring to color shifts from clip to clip, or in individual clips. If the former then you can quite rightly criticize my poor grading skills. That's not a V-Log issue.

If you are seeing it inside a clip, then I don't know what to tell you. I don't see that, or any banding.

Technically, none of you did. You've all downloaded the edited and processed file.

The original camera media would be far more helpful here.

You tell me which four clips you'd personally like, and I will try to figure out a way to make them available.

I noticed it in the first shot. Was this warped stabilized? Cause that's what it looks like. Curious if that's the GH5 IBIS at work, or something in post. Hopefully not the former.

And yeah, I'm seeing banding in the sky shots as well. Looks like what happens with 8 bit, I suspect 10 bit will fare better.

What you're talking about are compression artifacts. They are inherent to how the h264 codec works (Combining similar pixels into larger blocks of one color.) Expanding VLOG-L in post amplifies the artifacts. The extra precision of 10bit minimizes the effect, but it's still present.

Whether it is acceptable or not is a matter of personal taste. I did not find V-LOG L acceptable with the GH4's internal codec, I find it mostly acceptable with the GH5's internal 10-bit codec.

Looks like a Image Stabilization artifact. Seen that happen plenty of times while panning with OIS lenses, & imagine the same happens on Sensor Stabilized bodies. Appears it got stuck on the strong vertical lines (the trees).

I need to get a recorder to do some side by side tests. i can confirm that internally, it is way better than the GH4. However, as Joe has stated here, it is better, not totally fixed. I definitely still see blocks of pink and green when I pixel peep. I've done a ton of side by side testing between V-Log and the baked in 709 profiles and they don't exhibit the same issue at all. Smooth transitions even in 709 profiles, where the vlog shots show blocks of pink on skin or white walls, etc.

It is better than before, but still not right. It comes down to how much you can tolerate. As Joe said, it is mostly acceptable. It also depends on the situation. Some variances in skin complexion will exacerbate the issue, as will some backgrounds/flat surfaces with subtle gradients, etc.

Like I said though, I still want to do my own side by sides with a recorder.

Yeah, I don't like the magenta tint on the grade, just imo sorry! If that's the look you were going for that's totally fine. Definitely see banding in the sky. 60p played back in realtime looks, weird. What shutter speed/angle is this shot at?
