GH5 GH5 internal audio vs GH3/4

I have been wondering the Panasonic GH5 internal mic quality. It is odd that I cant find any test results for GH5 mic audio quality. Why testers are not testing audio? My GH5 seems to record low frequences much weaker than GH3/4. I must add bass very much when listening my GH5 recordings. (Wind cut is off).

I found a YT comparison GH4 vs GH5 mic quality. GH5 internal mic sound clearly lacks all low tones (bass). The difference in 20-100Hz is massive. Actually we can say GH5 does not record low tones (bass). It is a pity when recording for example live concerts.

I can't imagine using any camera's internal mic for anything other than a scratch track. At the very least, throw a Videomic Pro on it. ;-)

I guessed this will be the answer. Do not use...

Actually internal mic can be quite good and I have some decent concert recordings with GH4. The sound with big surround system is very realistic and pleasant with strong deep bass and good atmosphere. A big diesel train passing my GH4 slowly or big waterfall in a hike are impressive with big speakers. It is a pity that GH5 does not record that.

I cant normally carry external mics, tripods or other additional stuff when experimenting the world.

the new video mic pro R with the rycote shockmount is a very nice low cost option for on camera audio. The rycote shockmount update they did on it a couple years back was overdo and welcome, really makes it a nicer piece of kit to have in the toolbag when needed.

I found the GH2's internal mic audio very satisfactory for weddings and event work in general. This allowed me to put a light on top of the camera and be done with it.

The necessity of adding a mic on top only complicates the matter. I do wish camera makers would take built-in mic audio more seriously. It should be usable out of the box, at least as nat sound.

I'd rather they threw-out the mic completely and had better audio circuitry. Kinda like the built-in flash...nearly useless.

GH2/3/4 didn't have IBIS. Remember when the G85 had to have a firmware update to quiet the IBIS hum (which helped but didn't completely fix the issue)?

The GH5 mics are supposedly tuned/processed to just not record the frequencies the IBIS puts out. This is probably why the sound isn't that great from them.

Personally I couldn't care less. I'll take IBIS over internal mics any day, as IBIS makes a huge quality difference, while an internal mic has a very low performance ceiling. Even if it was as good as it could be, it'd still be poor compared to even my $60 VideoMicro, or of course one of the VideoMic Pros. Not to mention "real" audio running into the XLR adapter.

This is the first good possible explanation of GH5 thin audio.
