GH4 GH5 File Name Setting: User Setting problems

Has anyone tried using User Setting under File Name Setting (page 241 in the user manual)? I've been having trouble with file names on the GH5. I posted something in a GH5 Facebook group, but haven't found a solution.

I had set a custom File Name Setting, because I didn't want my filenames to conflict with existing files from my GH4. I set it to _167, and it was working fine. Until last week, when (without me realizing it), I saw that it had reset back to _100!

That's bad enough, but even worse was this: On 30 April, a clip I shot was given the name P1004101.MOV. Then, on 1 May, the first video I shot was given the very same name.

It happened again 2 days later. I had shot up to P1004339. I transferred the files to my computer, reformatted the card (in camera, as always), and again, without me realizing it, the next video clip I shot once again was named P1004101.

Even though I have reset the custom filename to _168, it continues to number the files as _100xxxx. I've re-formatted the card, turned the camera off and on, even removed and reinserted the card. It refuses to recognize the fact that I want to start with _168.

Someone thought it might have something to do with swapping SD cards, so I’ve now just gone back to having only one SD card in the camera (in slot 1), the original one that I had been using since I got my GH5. It again reset back to good ol' 1004101 (?!), and nothing I do (insert/remove, format, power on/off) makes it abide by the custom numbering (still there, I just checked) of _168.

Anyone have a clue what is happening?

Hi, i can write now here, after my account is activated. I have still trouble with the numbering. After fimeware update and the issue with the folder number is changing randomly I have had a total number reset yesterday, it starts with P1000000 again....
During my test over the weekend i found a new problem as i was shooting jpeg and raw in parallel. I got different time stamps after transfering the files to a PC.
Panasonic ask me to send some files to the Service center but they would like to get the cam..... after 5 weeks in use...... i am not happy... I will try to contact the dealer what we can do..... I have paid 2000 Euro and I hope I will get a new one.

I will Keep you updated.

diver_40, I'm glad you can post now. I did reply to your private message yesterday, but it looks like something went wrong because my reply is not in my 'sent' box.

I don't think there's something wrong with our cameras, I think it's the firmware -- possibly writing something to our SD cards that once there, cause these problems. Though it does seem strange that more people aren't reporting this, it might be most people don't pay attention to the file names / numbers.

Someone suggested that I update to the latest firmware version, and set a custom folder name. I did that, reformatted the SD card, took a photo, and it worked! The photo was named P1680001. However, I then re-formatted the card again, took another photo, and this time the photo was named P1011001. Since then I have not been able to get it to go back to P168xxxx, it just keeps incrementing P101xxxx.

I finally heard back from Panasonic, but was told to start over (because I had somehow contacted Panasonic India). So I started a new support request yesterday, but I don't hold much hope of getting anywhere.

It's very frustrating, because I need to have unique file names!

I just tried formatting a CF card that had yet to be in my GH5 (it was in my GH4). I formatted it, set the custom file name setting to _169****, and a custom folder name, then took a photo.

The number that was assigned to my first file after that?: 100-0001!! :Drogar-Mad(DBG):

Stranger and stranger.

So I removed the card mentioned above, and replaced it with the card that I had been using. The last file name was 101-1045. I took a photo, expecting the name to be 101-1046. But NO! It was 100-0002!

Set a new custom file name of _170****, took a photo: 100-0003.

Very stubborn camera.

Having the same annoying issue. Has this been solved or is Panasonic going to address this in their next update? Very import to not have multiple files with the same name.

Some news: I could talk to one Panasonic staff in Munich and the problem is not new, the guy from panasonic has similar issues with his own GH5 and they will work on it. The German Panasonic support got some pictures and they try to find the problem and I am waiting for news.
In the time being i have had a full reset to P1000000 during a shooting without doing "unusual" things. It is impossible to find out in which situation or circumstancs it happend.
I have changed sd cards but this doesn't solve the problem. I hope Panasonic can fix this in a firmware update. I have used other cameras from C and N with two card slots without such a mess.

@Braindead@70, that's a great idea. I see that the Adobe Bridge uploader tool has some sophisticated renaming options, so that will definitely help.

Panasonic customer support is TERRIBLE. It's now been two full business weeks since I wrote them, and no response. I even submitted a second support request after one week, saying I hadn't heard back on the first one (except for the auto reply that stated I'd get a response in 1-2 business days -- right!). I guess 'terrible' isn't the right word -- non-existent is more accurate.

It's good news that at least we know Panasonic is aware of the issue, so hopefully a solution will eventually be forthcoming. All we can do is wait.

I have the same issue. I use the Lexar 1000 cards with the GH5. I don't have this issue on my GH4. Hopefully the FW update will address the problem.

Same issue here, counter resets on its own. Whenever an update becomes available that fixes it, a quick post here would be appreciated.

Hi!
After a long mail exchange with Panasonic i have to send my GH5 to the service. It sounds that it can not be fixed with a firmware update. Last weekend the situation was really bad. I shoot a weeding with 3 cams and the GH5 was creating folders on its own but some of them with only 150 pics inside. During the day I have made some backups on external HD and there was no time to import with renaming, only copy folders and you have to be so careful I got 3 times folders like 101, 102, 103...... Inside the folders numbering wasn't consistent as well, stoping with 865 in one and 1001 in the next folder.....
I will send the cam to Panasonic now and I will keep you updated......

This sounds insane, keep us posted how this develops. I will have to do some more testing on how badly my GH5 behaves, but for some of the important things I have switched back to GH4.

For me, its the first time I have tried to do the and found it simply does not work. At first the "SET" button was highlighted to save the new folder name and now, no matter what I do - reformat card, restart .. bla bla bla ....... nothing. I can no longer write a new folder name period.

File under current firmware BUG --- needs to be fixed!!!

This is really odd, here's my story.

I have prefixed my files with PCD from the get go and with all of my 64GB cards there was never a problem. Today, for the first time, I used two Sandisk Extreme 128GB cards and the filenaming turned out to be absolute mess. Not only it repeated numbers I had from the previous day's shoot (on 64GB cards), but it created 18 directories where the files seem to be named randomly (well, they are sequential within the folder but each time start with an arbitrary number).

Why would this be a hardware problem though? That's too much, I am not staying without camera just for this. I like my folders cleanly structured, so this means I'll be renaming each and every time. Would be easy if not for repeating names within folders, meaning you cannot just copy the files over, sort by date and then rename sequentially. Still doable and not a huge time drain.. Just annoying.

That's interesting. My primary card is a SanDisk Extreme 128GB. I'll have to try to remember to use a 64GB card next time as primary and see if the problem still occurs. I'd never thought about that; thanks!

So how did it go, is this really a 128GB card issue?

It has nothing to do with the card size. I have had the same problem with 32gig SanDisk Extreme Pro cards.

My solution has been to take a pic at the end of every shoot. After saving all the files to my back up drives, I format the card(s) in cam then put the last folder and image file back on the card in slot 1. I have never had an issue if I keep the last numbered file on the card after saving all my files off to drives.

Hoping the new firmware update today will solve this issue.

Cheers,
Pete

So how did it go, is this really a 128GB card issue?

Been too busy, I haven't had a chance to try yet. But Pete's post (above) sounds pretty definitive. And the next time I do a shoot, I'll certainly try his method, unless the updated firmware fixes it. I'm not sure these will have fixed the problem or not, but I have some hope:

– In Relay Rec, there were cases where the video file number was not able to be reset. This bug has been fixed.
– In Relay Rec, there were cases where the video file number was reset after formatting the SD Memory Card. This bug has been fixed.
– In Backup Rec, there were cases where the file number was not reset even after applying resetting. This bug has been fixed.

The problem didn't repeat itself with the new firmware, so must be fixed -- or have been an one-off glitch.
