GH4 GH5 Clip Spanning

Just find another camera! Panny just ain't gonna meet your needs with the GH LINE.

That is very possible. There are may factors that go into my decision to stick with the BMPCC or move back to the GH5. Right now I'm just collecting data with which to make that decision.

Seeing reviews and footage from the 400 Mb/s mode after it's released will also be a factor in that decision.

Why does it even matter? When you drop it in premiere or whatever, the split is seamless. Then do your post tweaking and any audio edits and render out. Or do no edits and leave it rendering in background. Or use an external recorder.

There's a laundry list of compromises for every camera, I can't imagine this is that big of a deal. I'd like the BMPC to last long enough to actually record that take on a single battery. So whatcha gonna so? Just pick the best tool for you and figure out the solutions to the inevitable compromises.

They are both great (and very different) cameras...

Are you looking for solutions?

It matters for instance if you use Plural Eyes.
Plural Eyes treats the split clips as separate clips and because of that may correct audio drift which may give unwanted gaps.
To prevent it you have to manually merge the clips first and then run Plural Eyes.

I probably would, yes. I was not entirely satisfied with the GH4's 100 Mb/s quality. Given the added color information of the GH5's 4:2:2 signal, it's very possible I won't be satisfied with it's 150 Mb/s mode either.
You shouldn't necessarily expect better visual quality from the 400mbps all-i format. All that is given is less work for your CPU's during editing.

I think it will depend on how the 400 Mbps ALL-I mode is built, so it's possible the end result may be different from that of the 150 Mbps IPB format.

Exactly!

H.264's inter-frame compression reduces bitrate so the 150Mb/s versus the 400Mb/s I-frame only encoding may result in a similar image quality.

Can we hope that until that happens, we will not need to hear any more about your BMPCC?

You can always hope.

(But...don't get your hopes up. The feature set/image quality of the BMPCC is a very tough act to beat at this price point.)

That's possible. But a good rule of thumb is that All-I needs twice the data rate of IBP to match quality. So the 150 IBP translates to 300 All-I. Meaning the 400 All-I could be better quality.

We'll find out for sure in August.

It's possible, and would be nice, but one need look no further than the GH4 for a reminder that it's not necessarily so. Just a little PSA since many people assume that extra bandwidth always = better PQ.
