GH5 autofocus improvement on new firmware update for soon

Now let's hope they enable VFR in FHD 10-bit mode (it goes to 60p time base, but VFR mode in 24p time base mode is not available).

Good to see they are still working on camera

It is standard practice when making a narrative film to have the camera set on manual focus. There is a huge reason for that.

Because of this I fail to see the significance between the GH5 and the Sony mirrorless cameras. The only people who would have such a big issue are those who do not use manual focus while regularly shooting a narrative film. I can understand hobbiests complaining about this, and vloggers, but when we shoot films we use manual focus for total control.

In this day and modern tech, if the camera is capable of good to great auto focus and it's one of your marketing points, why not have it be as good as it can get? Manual focus is easy to achieve in a camera. They've been doing it over 100 years. Never seen a camera manufacture brag or even advertise about their seller manual focus capabilities.

A lot of people that bought the Gh5 have had concerns about the auto focus in video modes. Panasonic, "IF" they do in fact make improvements means they are listening to their customers and addressing concerns. Why question that?

Now, do you really really really think a majority of the Gh5's have been sold to only narrative filmmakers that only work with manual focus? And have you ever pulled off a shot on a low budget shoot with Canon's dual pixel tech, that otherwise would have not been possible without expensive focus rigs and a puller, putting you out of your budget?

Whats the problem with having access to both?

I purchased an a6300 last year. The autofocus is very good and truly opens up possibilities for one man band shooting that never existed before. Handheld or gimble, no way would manual focus or even just decent AF be as good. Same thing with my PX270. Using AF in fast paced environments like a football sideline allows me to focus on creativity and camera stability instead of fumbling around.

imho, this has nothing to do with professional or not. The only thing that matters is if the AF is good enough to be used in a professional environment.

GH line has more than a few folks doing event/wedding/documentary work with them.

Whats your point. I shot all of those things with ENG cameras that had no auto focus at all. I shot for a decade with no access to auto focus and when I finally did have it on a Canon XL1 I didn't use it because I knew how to actually shoot.

People need to practice shooting. You can honestly shoot just about anything with manual focus.

And that Focus Transition feature is awesome - I don't hear many people commenting on it. I'm delighted to be able to pull off a perfect focus pull while working alone.

Not even sure what that feature is like. I do not use Canon.

I did, however, pull off a shot with a D5100 on a Glidecam style stabilizer where I started the shot high and to the left in the trees, and then panned down and to the right as a car pulled up and parked in front of me, and then racked focus by hand myself, with no follow focus of any kind, and focused on the door as it opened and the driver got out.

This was not magic. It was not hell. It was noticing the position of the focus ring at each point, practicing going between both points to develop muscle memory for about 20 seconds, and then practicing the whole movement and focusing about 4 or 5 times. It was just making a film.

I sometimes forget about wedding videographers. That is not a circle I hang out in.
