GH5 GH5 6K HDR Anamorphic Short "Heirloom"

A few weeks ago the two very talented guys that run CRFTSHO shot a GH5 6K HDR Anamorphic short "Heirloom" for Panasonic using a $70K Angenieux 30-72mm anamorphic zoom, and it's finally out today...

And in case you're wondering how hard it is to shoot 6K HDR anamorphic with the GH5 ?

For starters, there is no HDMI monitor output when shooting in GH5 6K anamorphic mode ( there is in GH5 4K anamorphic mode ), so you currently have to pull-focus with the GH5 3.2 inch LCD display. ( hopefully a better solution will be found for this )

Lots of BTS videos and tall tales about shooting GH5 6K anamorphic on the CRFTSHO YouTube channel.

This 6K short is graded for HDR, so don't judge the image quality unless you're watching it on a proper HDR display.

My hat is off to Drew and Jeff of CRFTSHO, for being able to pull this thing off. Amazing stuff.

OK, it seems this push to HDR is coming from the television manufacturers, although strangely Panasonic does not sell TV in the US. I'm as excited as the next person about "6K" anamorphic, but I don't understand this decision to release this video in this format only. Don't judge the footage I'm told unless watching it on an HDR set. So how many people have one? I don't. So my response is that the colors are awful. At least release a regular colored version since the thing was shot in V-Log L.

So is this the new 3-D?

Youtube automatically recognizes if you system supports HDR, if not it will automatically show the tone-mapped video in SDR.

It sort of a "stereo but mono compatible" or "color but B&W compatible" thing!

I expect HDR TV sets to be the norm in about 3+ years, the way 4K is almost the norm in big-box stores. At some point it's going to become the default TV set sold in stores, so you'll end up getting HDR because there won't be any SDR sets available.

I think this serves a couple of purposes: it gives Panasonic something else to promote the GH5 with, and it's another small push towards HDR TVs. ( apparently YouTube fully supports HDR playback now )

They've been on the market for about a year now, but it's in the $1,500+ US price range. The cost is supposed to come down soon, but I'm wondering how long should I wait to buy? ( my current set is ancient )

I don't think so. HDR TV sets will display all of your old 8-bit REC709 content just fine, but you will probably want HDR content if the option is available.

...Keep in mind that this is just the first shot across the bow for HDR content. Sony added HLG formats to several of their prosumer cameras ( FS5 included ) via firmware upgrades a few weeks ago. Expect to see a lot more HDR cameras and content over the next year. HDR content is not going away any time soon.

The video was actually shot using V-Log L but color graded using the HDR10 standard.

It is always best to shoot RAW or log to have the widest dynamic range and gamut available and then opt for various deliverables, HDR10 being one of them.

Yes, I know this, but the HGL profile is going to be the quick'n'dirty way to generate HDR content ready for viewing or broadcast.

From the CRFTSHO BTS videos it sounds like editing and grading their HDR footage for YouTube playback was a bit of a nightmare, with the 10 minute short taking a full day to render.

Apparently the only software that worked for CRFTSHO was DaVinci Resolve.

Sure for those folks who do not want or can't grade HLG is basically the new "just upload or view it" Rec.709.

I think this is going to become a popular broadcast format, where you shoot a live event and then hand over your footage to be made broadcast ready ASAP.

And it might become the new home-movie standard because Panasonic has included a h.265 72 Mbps HLG format on the GH5 that can be played directly from your memory card using a Panasonic HDR TV.

Drew and Jeff are great.I watched both HDR and SDR version from my HDR capable TV and could not see big difference. ”Isabella" looked more HDR.
