GH5 GH5 2.4 FIRMWARE AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD - autofocus improved

Looks like autofocus is beginning to be actually usable on the GH5.

Apart from the autofocus, the update is disappointing, no new features or options.

"Improvement of image quality when using V-Log for VFR recording in Creative Mode GH5s"

"Fix of bug that sometimes caused timecode to be reset upon battery change GH5" <-- This was major irritant for me.

I hope they fixed the timecode reset issue like they said they were, mine has started to reset on every shoot.

Haha!

Unless we get some technology that knows what we want to have in focus all the time continious autofocus will never be as good as manual focus.
If face tracking worked reliably, and didn't hunt when the face was lost, we'd be covering 50%+ of the need for manual focus.

"Follow this actor/model/dancer/singer/YouTube blowhard until I say not to." Just give me THAT mode and my follow focus would mostly gather dust.

Played a bit with the new firmware and am trying continuous autofocus on f/1.2 for the first time.
I tried tracking, seems to work but eh, how do you reset/undo the tracking?

Do you still need to re-jam every so often an attached timecode box?

Do you still need to re-jam every so often an attached timecode box?

I've not installed the firmware update yet, but only the GH5s has the jam sync capability, and what I had learned with it (GH5s) previously is that HDMI timecode works better than jam sync because it re-syncs automatically when you reconnect it to a running HDMI timecode device, which for me is the DR701D. So I don't think that is any help to you but that's how I used it. Now when I did reconnect HDMI, it was incumbent to reboot the camera after the connection was made to the DR701D. When I would disconnect, the DR701D timecode would continue incrementing or maybe it didn't. It was hard to know and it didn't matter because Resolve would only look at the entry timecode so you still had a timecode with the timeline. So the main points I had to remember, reboot camera when reconnecting HDMI timecode interface, and reset the timecode in the GH5 and GH5s whenever I changed batteries. This was two step, from the Panasonic menu, reset the timecode, then after the reset, set the timecode to the internal running clock, time of day.

So before the days shoot, I would use the Panasonic iPhone app to set the clock to the iPhone, for each camera. Now they didn't sync exactly this way, would start out maybe 2 seconds apart. But then if I followed the rule for resetting the timecode at each battery change, both cameras would remain very close to each other, just a few seconds for the duration of an all-day shoot. So for my multi cam edit, this was enough to be a useful time saver in post. I could find something to sync them to, hand clap etc., and then whatever sync offset there was would remain constant throughout the timeline, did not have to resync multiple times in other words.

The GH5s/GH5 internal clock would remain very accurate with very little drift over the course of a week or more, but for some reason the timecode doesn't operate with the same precision, so I would resync everything the night before, including also a DR10L and a H4nPro and DR701D. I would just sync them manually to the time on the iPhone.

Also I don't think it makes sense for me to use a timecode box to jam sync the GH5s when I cannot do the same with the GH5. And the GH5s doesn't have a true, running timecode input or output, just jam sync input or jam sync output, the exception being HDMI which stays frame accurate as long as you are connected. Hope that helps.

I shot with the new firmware yesterday. I thought the autofocus was much improved. Here is a clip straight from the camera. Shot with Oly 75-300 at full telephoto with IBIS and ETC on. Download to view at full quality.

That is impressive. What focus settings did you use?

Thanks for sharing.
