Hello everyone! I need some help understanding the GH5 10-bit 4:2:2 4K DCI HDMI out!

I'm about to buy the Video Devices PIX-E5 to use with the Panasonic GH5.
( I don't want to get the ATOMOS it is too large for my needs )

My questions is, what are the benefits of recording on an external recorder at 10-bit 4:2:2 4K DCI?

I know Prores is easier to edit, I usually convert the GH5 files to Prores but do I get the same video quality 10-bit 4:2:2 4K DCI internally and externally?

It seems that the Proress files will use more hard drive space than the native GH5 files?

I will be filming about 3 hours of interviews and I t seems that it will be cheaper to buy memory cards for the camera than the drives for the PIX-E5.

If I decide to record externally what Prores format should I use? 422 or HQ?

Thanks for te help!

It is my understanding that the Video Devices PIX-E5 offers the same as the GH5, which is, DCI 10bit 422, 24p through HDMI. Therefore, you would be wise to record internally because SD cards would be cheaper than the drives required for the Video Devices PIX-E5. This is my understanding and someone may have additional information.

ProRes HQ is a much better choice than ProRes 422 for recording in 10-bit.

But don’t expect to see much of a visual difference between ProRes HQ & the GH5’s internal recording when filming interviews. And you won’t see much of a difference comparing the GH5’s ALL-I, & Long GOP, codecs when filming interviews either.

Lately I’ve stopped recording externally, & set the GH5’s Dual Slot Function to Backup Record in case one of the SD cards were to malfunction.

I honestly don't think you'll see any difference recording externally. You'll just have much larger files to deal with. Obviously it saves time by not having to convert it to prores tho.

Thank you to everyone for clarifying!

I will buy the Devices PIX-E5 and use the exposing tools that come with.

Thanks again!

The 400Mbps files are as easy to edit as ProRes. I was considering this recorder for it's size, but like many others here, I've been recording internally. The only reason I think you need an external recorder is if you are recording constantly for several hours, as it may be cheaper from a media standpoint. But the Video Devices is using mSATA format, which is almost extinct. Think about that before purchasing. I took a quick look for drives and the largest I could find on Amazon was 512GB.

Sorry, but the only mSata drives approved for the Pix E recorders are the Samsung 850 EVO drives, which are available in 250GB, 500GB and 1TB sizes. The advantage of the PixE recorder is not only ProRes recording, but much better audio support when you add the LR audio interface to the recorder. It gives you pro level mic preamps, and pro quality digital audio, it also can record H.264 for streaming, and the monitor is excellent HD IPS touch screen, with HDMI/SDI Cross-Conversion, 4K to HD Downscaling done right, and full exposure tools, including false color, Waveform and Vector scopes, and more.

Thank you very much Denny16!

I got the Pix E yesterday and I'm so happy with the unit.
I love the color accuracy and the exposure tools!
