GH4 GH4 with EF Metabones Speedbooster

Hi there,

I have been scouring the internet for an answer to my question with no luck so thought I'd ask you guys for help.

I recently bought the GH4 and a Canon EF to MFT Speedbooster. I have made the stupid mistake of overlooking the fact that these EF Speedbooster doesn't take EF-S mount lenses so my 17-55 2.8 IS won't work! Damn... So my second option is to go for the Sigma 18-35 1.8 but I can't for the life of me find out if that will be compatible with the Speedbooster. I can't even find a definitive answer to weather the sigma is an EF or EF-S mount.

Does anyone know if the Sigma 18-35 1.8 will work with the Canon EF Metabones Speedbooster?

Thanks!
Dan

Hi Dan:
EF-S lenses protrude further into the mount than EF lenses, and this causes an interference with the Speed Booster optics. The mounting flange itself, and the distance from the flange to the image plane, is identical for both EF and EF-S. Fortunately, it seems that in most, if not all, EF-S lenses the interference is caused solely by a piece of protective plastic attached to the rear of the lens. In the case of the 17-55/2.8, numerous people have reversibly modified the lens simply by gently pulling off the plastic piece while zoomed out to 55mm. Apparently no tools required. Some info here: http://bmcuser.com/showthread.php?1...ooster-Anyone-use-them&highlight=speedbooster

Sigma lenses for APS-C/DX format have to clear the mirror on both Nikon and Canon camera bodies, so by default they are not EF-S.

Thanks so much for you speedy reply my friend! I have been pulling out my hair today trying to get my setup sorted out in time for some shoots next week, I'm sure that feeling of imminent stress is a familiar one to many.

Could you please elaborate on what you are saying about the Sigma lens. So you are saying that the Sigma 18-35 1.8 is definitely not EF-S? B&H say it is EF-S http://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/hands-reviews/hands-review-sigma-18-35mm-f18-lens

Thanks!

To add to brianc1959,

the sigma lens, though called ef-s since it it intended for crop sensor cameras is not like the canon ef-s physically which has a protrusion at the rear making them hit the speedbooster. The sigma lens does not have this so it can attache to the speedbooster without causing damage.

And as he mentioned some canon ef-s users simply removed this plastic protrusion so they will adapt as well.

I am using both the Sigma 18-35 and the Canon 17-55 with the SpeedBooster with out issue (once I remover the plastic coller on the Canon)

BH is actually incorrect by calling it EF-S in that article. You'll notice the actual product page for the lens lists it as an EF mount in the specifications, not EF-S. It is an EF mount lens designed for Canon cameras with APS-C sensors, but not actually an EF-S mount.

You are all legends, thank you so much for your responses!

Rowy, I am was wondering what your experience of both the Sigma and Canon is. Do you have a preference? Do you find the IS a crucial factor? At this stage I am thinking about selling on my Canon 17-55 and buying the Sigma for that shallow DoF. Any advice?

Canon all the way - Image quality is better.

Recently picked up a Sigma 18-35mm in EF mount. Been too busy to throughly test out but did a quick check to see if it was parfocal.

For this test I mounted the lens on a 7D to eliminate any issues with the Speedbooster & aimed it at Lens Align. Due to size of this target the subject distance was only 2-3 feet.

At this distance my copy definitely is not parfocal since the focus moved behind the target as the lens was zoomed from 35mm-to-18mm.

Need to repeat the tests at greater working distances, but think I'll return this copy, & maybe look into rehoused versions.
