GH4 GH4 V-log?

(this is a CONSUMER camera, not PRO)...
...Historically, MAGIC LANTERN added twice the features for free, and Technicolor also gave away CINESTYLE free, hate to pay for a simple PICTURE STYLE

Two things:

The camera may be a consumer camera, but what you're asking for is a pro feature, without a doubt.

Magic lantern and Technicolor are both third parties.

That price should be closer to $50 in my mind (this is a CONSUMER camera, not PRO)

V-log is a PRO feature, and there are many of us who are making our living with the GH4 and along with other cameras. So paying an additional $200 for V-log is nothing if it provides us with a better image. ( also I'm not keen on waiting another year for the GH5 to be released, so $200 for an upgrade now is a fair trade in my eyes )

If it works as advertised (2 stops more) and the 10bit 422 is nice out the camera. They can take the $200 off me now. Spent more on SDs

So I have 2 GH4s. If I pay for the firmware update, I assume I'd have to pay for it twice. Or can I use the same upgrade file to upgrade both cameras? Haven't done paid update before.

With the old AF-100's paid upgrade to allow 1080p60, there was a registration process in the firmware to enable the new framerate... you ran that, then input the unique code you purchased, then patted your head cross-eyed and repeated "I HURTLE MY WHIRTLING THROUGH THE DOOR" seven times backwards in Estonian... or something like that. My guess is it wouldn't carry over to multiple cameras.

LOL. The thirst is strong.
Again, another perfectly stated thought!! The cycle: hoping, wishing, mad, crying, begging, offering.

Like Panasonic will be swayed by all this reverse psychology going on in this thread. We just have to be patient and see what works out.

I'd happily pay for any well implemented pro features. One fee for internal 10-bit, or even just 4:2:2. Another for Log. Etc, etc.

And I'd be more than happy to pay extra for a proper fix to the HDMI latency & Timecode!

I am with you, have always thought that there would be a big market to pick and choose different firmware features for a fee. Maybe it would give our investments longer life and promote the manufactures to keep developing new features sooner, then teasing us with the every two year and "that" feature will be available on the next model.

I'll pay for the upgrade for v-log. There just isn't a competitor for the GH4 yet that can do anamorphic in its size range that will also take a speedbooster.

Not sure how useful V-Log will be without 10bit...

I have a Shogun, so I'm all set for 10bit, however, not everyone has a Shogun - and to be honest, there are many times that I really wish I didn't have to connect the Shogun to the GH4 in order to get 10bit. It just really kills the stealth factor.

I find the 10bit from the GH4 really, really nice, and can really push my colour-grades with it. I also own the A7s, and though I like S-Log, it just doesn't seem to work well with the 8bit colour-space...

So is this guy just boosting the highlights and midtones and pushing saturation? The difference between graded and ungraded is so drastic. The graded versions look awesome but I'm curious how he achieved them.

Just out of curiosity, are you recording 4K from the GH4 or just a 1080p 10-bit signal? I'm curious how my Ninja Blade might handle this V-log footage by setting the camera to 4K mode and recording the downressed 10-bit 1080p signal. Not quite stealth, but a bit smaller footprint.

Both, actually. I use 1080 @ 60P 10bit mostly. My primary camera is my Blackmagic Pocket (which I mainly use in ProRes 10bit Film-Log), however it lacks the ability to shoot slow-motion. So when I need slow-motion, I grab the GH4. I have an A7s, but most of the time I prefer the 10bit colour-space of the GH4 over my A7s' 8bit S-Log.

And this is why I've been so, annoyingly, adamant about Panasonic releasing V-Log to us ASAP. If I had V-Log, it would help so much in matching the 10bit Film-Log from my Blackmagic Pocket. However, the new Blackmagic Micro is the same sensor as the Blackmagic Pocket, but with the ability to shoot up to 60FPS. So I think instead of waiting around for V-Log, I'll sell the GH4, pre-order the Micro, and throw my x0.58 Speed Booster, Shogun, and Varavon ENG grip on the Micro :)

@Jonsmovies - that's exactly the way to go with the ninja. Set the GH4 to 4k internally, and downres thru hdmi. People report it's the best 1080 this way, and it looks pretty good to me, despite it being 8-bit. It's the move into 422 color space that's the good thing. What's great is having 4k internally for re-sizing, and using the ninja 422 recording for the body of the programme. What's not so great is the awful lag.

I was wondering the same thing. Isn't V-log like trying to shoot flat in a 8 bit codec? Are not the same 8 bit limitations still there and pushing 256 values that are that flat could cause banding?

I think you won't see banding at all. Because this camera IS indeed noisy (best method for dithering). At least if no NR is used IN camera. ;)

LOG works very well on other 8 bit cameras as well (a7s, C100/C300 etc)... :)

There are many benefits using LOG than any REC709 based profile. Hope it arrives soon. :)

Not really. On my A7s, when you shoot S-Log, then push it just a bit, it shits itself. In 4:2:2 to the Shogun, you get a bit more room to play, but it is nothing like 10bit. Nothing like it at all. My BMPCC in 10bit ProRes, and GH4, when shot in 10bit to my Shogun, absolutely murder my A7s. The A7s may be a king in low-light, but that's about it. The 8bit in the A7s is a major downer. I've virtually relegated it to photography only.
