GH4 GH4 V-log Exposure, IRE/Brightness Values? Spot Meter?

Previously on my 5d m3 I was used to having the spot meter from magic lantern that gave you an IRE number from 0-100 to tell you how bright whatever object was in the spot.

Now switching to Gh4 and choosing spot metering, it gives you cross hairs as a spot, but doesn't tell you the IRE value to know how bright it is.

I just recently purchased the V-log upgrade. To expose correctly for V-log, they tell you that you should set your 18% grey tones to 42%. My plan was to use the spot meter on 18% grey card and increase my exposure until it met 42% but how can I know how bright my card really is if I can't see any numbers on the camera? How do you guys tackle this?

theres not much built in to help expose v-log. I use the zebras so I know when I'm blowing the image out, the histogram to give me an overall idea of where everything is sitting and guess the rest. You could also expose using one of the other profiles and then switch back to v-log.

Beyonfd the camera, I use my light meter when I'm travelling light but mostly I use the exposure tools on my Atomos Shogun with a LUT applied.

I've tried various methods now, and where I've settled is to simply ETTR. I set one zebra at 50% (as low as it can go) and another at 75% as rough guides, but they are only very rough.

As long as you don't under-expose, you're golden. V-LOG handles reasonable over-exposure like a champ (two stops, no problem.) Under exposure is another story, just like it always has been on the GH4. A lot of shadow noise.

Simply use any of the products that feature a proper waveform if you must hit an exact IRE number. You'll find that experience will make this easy for you.

Without spending money on a light meter you can use the spot meter on the the middle grey portion of a Photovision Target and adjust the exposure till the camera histogram turns white. This should give you a proper exposure because it gives me the same exact reading that I get from my Sekonic Dualmaster L-558 Cine light meter.
This method will not work with a regular 18% grey card it only works with the Photovision Target.

I gave up trying to nail exposure with the zebras and the histogram. Even with firmware 2.4 correcting the zebra and histogram issues, I find myself always using my light meter to get it right. So I just bought a Ninja 2 so I could get the 10-bit and false color for a low price.
