GH4 GH4 SD Cards

Hi All,
I am hoping to get some guidance on SD Card capacity for the GH4. I spoke with Panasonic Support and they recommend only up to 64GB UHS Speed Class 3 (U3). They said anything larger than 64GB may result in loss of data, shutdowns, etc.

Are many of you using 128GB and even 256GB cards without any issues?

Is PNY a good brand or should I stick with Sandisk?

I am hoping to pick-up several 256GB for multi-hour continous 4K and HD shooting.

Thank you

Been using the Transend 128GB Class 10 U3 cards, since I've had my GH4 (got it week of release) - zero issues so far.

Have you heard much about PNY?

Thanks

PNY is a fair, OK, so-so performing memory brand. SanDisk is about one of the most reliable brands you can buy, but be VERY CAREFUL where you buy. SanDisk is just about the most counterfeited brand on the market so that should tell you something.

I no longer order memory cards from Amazon as some of their vendors seem to be "dancing with the devil". Some cards ordered from Amazon vendors have been sent back to SanDisk (SanDisk has a lifetime warranty on their cards) for replacement and SanDisk replied with, "Not one of ours".

interesting, I had issues with my Transend 128GB Class 10 U3 card. buffer error and what not, stop using it after that. Sanddisk extremPro cards have been 100% reliable for me.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the suggestions.

Looks like I'll get my hands on some 128GB Sandisk from B&H or Adorama.

I've searched around and can't find anyone mentioning using 256GB with a GH4.

Just a suggestion. Rather than getting one humongous card, think about getting two or three smaller ones. Unless you are doing insanely long captures, the time it takes to replace a card is negligible, especially if formatted beforehand. That way, if one card does go down, you don't loose everything.

Hi,
I spoke with Panasonic support and they recommend no greater than 64GB cards to be used. Anything larger and they said the GH4 may not function correctly, save correctly, etc. Obviously this is incorrect as hundreds and hundreds of people are using 128GB cards without any issue.

I also spoke with B & H and they confirmed the GH4 is capable of recording to a 256GB memory card. So I'll either go with the Sandisk 128GB Extreme Pro U3 or the 256GB.

I'll either go with the Sandisk Extreme Pro U3 128GB or 256GB.

Thanks

Hi stoneinapond,
The captures will be quite long. I can safely get 2hrs straight of 4K (45GB/hr) on 128GB cards; anything longer will require 256GB.

When changing cards over, do you need to turn off the GH4 or is it hot swappable?

Thanks

You don't have to shut it off. If I do take it out while on it's always after a good amount of time since I last recorded, at least 30 seconds. I often turn it off and wait for the green light to go out, just to be sure, but I've never had a bad file by taking it out of camera while still powered.

Also don't use U1 cards - most people say they're safe, but recently had issues with them recording in 4K, even though most of the time, they work, don't trust them on something important.
