GH4 GH4 Recording Stops Shortly After Starting

Hi Guys,

After I upgraded the firmware when the last update came out I have been having an issue. When I hit the record button after about 5 seconds the camera will stop recording. It has only done this once per shooting session and it has only happened the first time I roll camera. I initially thought that it was a card issue as it seemed to only do it with my Transcend 64 Gig SDXC U3 cards, more specifically my number 1 card, but I always use that card first on shoots. However on a recent shoot the Client bought all of my cards as they had no way to download the footage. So upon returning to the office I purchased six of the Sandisk 64 Gig SDXC Extreme Pro U3 cards and on the next shoot it did the same thing. Has anyone had their GH4 to do this?

Thanks in advance.

Do you have a monitor plugged into HDMI? There is an issue where if you have a monitor plugged in, and the dial mode your using (C1, C2 or C3) is set to 8-bit output, but the Manual dial setting is 10-bit, you'll get an hourglass when you go to record. Might be related. Set all your dial modes to 8-bit output and see if it still occurs.

Have you tried benchmarking the cards on your computer with something like CrystalDiskMark or the like? I do seem to recall that some of the UHS-II cards had speed issues recording in 4K, even though offload was blazing fast.

There's definitely a wide disparity in card write speeds out there between seemingly similar types.

For my money, I'm using the Sandisk Extreme Pro 64GB and 128GB SDXC cards (UHS-I), which record continuously at around 92MB/s using the CrystalDiskMark tool, and I've never had issues in the camera.

HTH!

Cheers from Tokyo,

Paul :)

Hi Guys,

We almost always shoot in 24 or 30P at 3840x2160 and I always format the cards in camera. My downlink system is plugged into the HDMI port. I will go through those settings to see if I can find anything unusual. My brother, the camera man controlling the gimbal (on the UAV) says that when recording stops it pops up a very brief message saying something about write speeds, but there is no way these cards are too slow. I have actually used my old Sand Disk 32 Gig Extreme Pro SDHC U1 card at 4K and they work fine. Like I said this only happens the first time we hit record on a shoot or if I happen to be testing something at home and it never happened before I updated the camera with the latest firmware.

I have never benchmarked any of my card, but I will give it a whirl. It would be too strange if my number 1 Transcend and my number 1 SanDisk card have issues out of 12 cards total.

Have a great day and thanks for the suggestions.
