GH4 GH4 file structure

Hi All. Hoping someone out there might have some insight on this:

Do I need to keep the folder/file structure (tree) when transferring footage I shoot with the GH4 in the .mov format in order to ensure that spanned files work correctly in edit? I know that keeping file structure is critical in the P2 world, which I'm very familiar with, and as far as I can tell from what I've read on the web, it is best to keep the AVCHD file structure from the GH cameras intact as well. But I'm concerned with whether I need to keep the file tree in tact with .mov files from the GH4, even though I can play, import and edit the .mov files directly. Don't want to find out when it's too late that I should have kept the file structure in place when transferring footage.

I just find the deep file structure cumbersome when working with footage from many separate SD cards, especially since every card transferred is going to have the same DCIM and 10X_PANA folders, ie:
Day_One_Footage > SD_card_1 > DCIM > 10X_PANA > .mov files.

Would love to keep it simple, ie:
Day_One_Footage > SD_card_1 > .mov files

Thanks!

In premiere when editing natively I just grab the files out of the folder and label them by roll#

Thanks for the insight. I know it is possible to simply grab the files (at least in FCP7), just wasn't sure if I was setting myself up for potential problems down the editing line by breaking links to any hidden metadata or reference files. Glad to know that it works for you without issue. I'll likely do the same. Thx!

I do the same as @renegadewill. Never had any issues with just grabbing and dropping the .MOV wherever I want. AVCHD, on the other hand, is awful if you don't keep the structure in tact. I've had nightmares by ripping the .MTS files.

Thanks, Daniel! More confirmation that I can simplify the file transfer and management process for the .mov files. Cheers!

While you should be able to grab any .mov file, the same may not be the case for other file types.

FCP7 was also not optimised for playing the H264 codec, even within a .mov wrapper, so you may still want to transcode within FCP7 for any heavy editing work. Simple topping and tailing you'll be fine.
