Hi

I have the GH2, thinking about getting the GH4 with its 4K, I work with FCPX on a MacBook Pro (2010) and was curious : Anyone out there with similar setup having any special problems? Is working with 4K a major strain on the MBP? Stuttering, dropped frames, spinning ball wait times?

Any Info, tips & pointers would be appreciated.

I've been working on a 2011 Macbook Pro i7 with 16gigs of ram and a 4TB raid 0 thunderbolt drive and editing on PP CS6. I have a GH4 and shoot UHD only and I'm having problems editing in real time even at 1/4 res. I don't know about FCPX but PPCS6 is just making my MBP slow down to a crawl. It's no longer a joy to edit.

Thanks for the reply! A bit daunting that.

If you don't mind, it would really help: What's the difference between UHD and DCI and what does it mean in terms of file size, quality, use in fcpx, does one have a choice in its 'deployment'? Sorry, am just trying to get a grasp.

Hi, here we go again. The main difference UHD and DCI is that DCI gives slightly better resolution of 4096X2160 to the UHD that gives you 3840X2160. UHD is more flexible that allows for different frame and bit rate. As far as FCPX is concerned I couldn't tell you as I'm using PPCS6 and I'm really starting to hate it when comes to handling the UHD footage. Seriously thinking of switching over to FCPX . I think as far as deployment goes your probably best to optimized (Prorez) your footage.

Thanks, salvo! Much appreciated. There do seem to be a lot of choices, DCI/UHD, frame rate, bit rate, hopefully it won't be too difficult to ponder when choosing, your info helps!

Why not head to Apple Support forums and their FCPX board before buying. You may have to register but they might give you an idea of how well it'd work on FCPX.

It's in the cart. Last question: Did anybody buy an extended warranty with the GH4? 2-year is $73.xx. Hmm. Haven't before, but did w/ my laptop, forgot about it till it went kerploot and the warranty saved my *ss. Not sayin' I gotta with this but . . .
