GH4 GH4 codec

No, we have acquisition specs too - check them out, they're online for BBC, Discovery etc.

Steve

For your A-camera, B-camera, etc. yes (right tool for the job, remember?). When you're shooting or gathering b-roll, just about anything is fair game, including DSLR footage.

Yeah...but that's not what I was talking about (read the thread before posting, remember?)

Lol...best of luck to you sir. Time to go on-location. Maybe when you get to do other tasks besides being a camera operator you can appreciate the wider broadcast process. out.

Sounds like someone who's finally realised that they've not read or understood the thread properly. We got there in the end :)

I think he has read the thread. You seem much less interested in learning about this issue than you professed to be a couple of pages back. Those specs you read online from BBC, Discovery, etc... their EPs couldn't even tell you what they mean. You have a show they want, it looks really great: Done, now deliver the goods.

It's a jungle out there, hack your way through it and persevere.

That's a big generalisation about EPs, some are very knowledgeable. I am always interested in learning, but some people don't seem to taking on board the fact that certain broadcasters do have their technical requirements, and they stick to them for the majority of their output - when people keep saying things like "You have a show they want, it looks really great: Done, now deliver the goods" it's not educating at all as it's not actually the reality of the situation.

As the EBU minimum codec for broadcast spec for HD is 50 mb long GOP or 100 mb I frame, presumably for 4k this codec needs to be 4x the data rate (at least)?
Looking at the GH4 it has this, at first glance, impressive 100mb/sec long GOP codec, but presumably that equates to a pretty poor, non-broadcast-spec 25 mb codec in HD.

I can only speak from a UK point of view, but I wouldn't be thinking about 4k delivery using the GH4. As some posters have correctly said, the BBC allow a 20% content quota from non-approved cameras for hd programming, the vast majority of which is supplied by DSLRs. Youll have no problem with including the GH4 in this category, but no where else. And other broadcasters HD camera specs are even tougher - Discovery Channel is a prime example.

A challenge:

Find me a production that was commissioned by, or was desired to be bought by Discovery Channel (by the channel or Discovery Productions, their production arm) that looked fantastic, great audio, provided the content they wanted, but was then discarded because the 20% or 25% or 50% ratio of 'approved cameras' was breached. This is not rhetorical. Find one.

Who is accepting a 4k deliverable at this point? Not being confrontational, just curios as I don't know. We have a 4k production that's nearly complete (red cameras) and I'd love to see it find a home in native format.
