GH4, 4K Anamorphic Test

You're welcome, my pleasure :-)

Have you noticed any aliasing with the original files?

Not with the ones uploaded to video. Any artifacts present in the Vimeo player are from their compression. However, I did have a couple of clips that weren't included where moire on a big building with crazy detail and shot from a particular angle was an issue. I don't know whether the anamorphic adapter was introducing that or if hand holding 4K was the issue. More testing needs to be done.
However, it only appeared with one location and I don't consider it a major problem. Applying image stabilization helped clear it somewhat and I have a feeling that if such a clip is absolutely needed, with the right treatment the issue can be mitigated. Additionally, I was using the Panasonic lens at the time and I'm wondering with its inherent sharpness, if that is also part of the cause. The following day I did reduce the sharpness in camera to -5 but forgot to retake that particular framing. I will try again next week and perhaps with a different taking lens with and without the adapter.

What I've understood from footage seen and evaluated is that BMPC4K is a way more solid as far as aliasing concerns.

I've downloaded the original file available on vimeo, even though already downsampled to 1080p. And if you'll run it on VLC player going with a 1366x768 display, that will pop up. Unless you test going smaller or higher in anything directly proportional to native resolution. Testing different pairs, you'll definitely notice the aliasing is there trying to come out as a bubble.

I am not sure the anamorphic adapter is the problem. But I'd bet on that lens. Take a look on these ones:

Similar glass, same issues.

And now, take a look on this one with much different glass and much much better but still there on minute 01:25 (visible on my downsampled 1366x768 display):

Post edited up there and questions addressed to the original shooter-posters on vimeo.

That would be great, if you could try to repeat it with the lowest setting for sharpness. With other glass. And same lens, as well.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and from your recent experience on field with your new GH4 unit.

...How are you liking the SLR anamorphic adpater? Any issues?

Many thanks Frank.

I've had no issues with adapter itself. It is simple to use and I'm very happy with the image. The only issues that is common to the system is that certain lenses don't like that added weight place on the front of them, binding the focus mechanism and possibly damaging them. So it's important to consider that when choosing the taking lens.

As a timely aside, I just purchased the updated version of the SLR Magic 25mm T0.95, specially engineered to avoid the problem. Got it yesterday and although it starts to be a bit of a heavy beast, initial shots look quite gorgeous. Will post some footage as soon as I have something.

Thanks for the heads-up. I hadn't considered that. Congrats on the new lens :)
