GH3 vs Ninja2

I made a short comparison video with the GH3 and Panny 12-35 vs the Ninja 2. I recorded at 50 and 72Mbps and couldn't tell any difference at all except for the black levels being lower on the Ninja2. I did notice the the noise in the dark areas of the 72Mbps footage seemed to be not quite as pleasing as in the lower quality 50Mbps footage. Go figure?!

Just realized it won't give you 1080 unless you watch the vid on youtube. I've never noticed before.

I hope you don't take this the wrong way because I am glad when people take the time to do tests like this but this test tells us very little about what the codecs are doing.

Image compression is about motion. Particularly true of the IPB based formats like the 50mbps mode. When a camera is perfectly still and nothing moves in the scene the encoder hardly has to work at all. Where a format like ProRes shows its advantage is when a lot of complex movement takes place in the frame. Like explosions or sudden quick moves, or random blowing field of tall grass or tree leaves. With an IPB format the encoder tries to predict what the in between frames will need. If the video is still then the predication is super simple because nothing changes. It hardly needs any bits at all to build the in between frames. With complex motion however the encoder needs a lot more bits to build in the predicted motion in the in between frames. This is where IPB formats will start to sometimes fall apart compared to formats like ProRes.

It is nice to see exactly what takes place with a still scene with each encoder but to really see an advantage you need to shoot complex motion at the same time with all the formats. Then you will start to see some macro blocking on the 50mbit footage and perhaps more noise in the 72mbit version.

With that said the 50mbit format holds up exceptionally well and you would need some pretty complex hardcore motion to really see it fall apart.

I've made a comparison with the GH3 vs the Ninja2 and the different colour profiles to see which ones effect the HDMI output the most:

Also did a low light comparison. Looks like the GH3 is boosting the internal codecs at very low light, as the output at low ISOs is MUCH darker on the Ninja2.
