GH2 GH3 Picture and promo video of the GH3 posted!!!

I love the m4/3 format. I think of it as S16mm for the digital age. Now for some decent fast compact cinema grade glass to go with it.

With the size of their sensor BMCC should have been m4/3 with full electronic lens controls right out of the gate. Big mistake on their part going EOS mount. M4/3 is an open standard so all the lens protocols are readily available to participating manufacturers. Would have made Black Magic's job easier and the camera much more flexible and useful.

Alot of what i see in that "release" video looks to have followed Gunther Manchus works, just compare with his latest video "Listen to the heart of Tuscany"

One 'feature' I'd love to see on this new camera is the disappearance of meaningless mode names like FSH, FH, etc.

Just call it what it is, man. And use proper terminology. 1080p/24. 1080i/30 (NOT 60). 1080p/60 (That one can say 60). 720p/60, etc.
A big +1!

The idiotic GH2 terminology drives me nuts. By the time you figure out what their terms mean and why each is important, you've learned enough to use the proper terminology. And then, you're constantly translating! Gaak!

In any case, if someone can't use a GHx camera with the correct technical terms, they shouldn't be using it. A P&S is more their speed.

Dan.

P.s. I wonder how many DSLR owners have only one lens and never take the camera out of "P" mode?!? Of course, since it's a DSLR, it must take better pics. Umm... Riiight.

Lol that article neglects to take into account that the AF line was discontinued. Panasonic includes pro features in their GH3 because there IS NO pro line to cannibalize.

Yeah the compression sucks, but I have a decent 6th sense about this kind of thing. Even though I can't nit pick at the detail, I can still look at other aspects of the image. I have an inkling that the DR has improved, but hard to tell in any of those shots. I would freak out if by Monday they actually had a mini short prepared to show it off. Maybe Philip Bloom got a bit of play time with it. Why can't Panny just throw out a couple bodies to some indie folk and get a really good video or 2 up for launch? It would absolutely do wonders for their launch sales and build up serious interest. Anyhow, I'm glad they're not sweeping the video capabilities of this little monster under a rug like they did with the GH2.

Yeah, like the Canon C300 and Jonathan Yi's demo video. Despite the polish of the Mobius short, the addition of Jonathan's indie intro video seemed to be what got everyone really interested.

Uh, no, its not.

Again, 2divisions totally different. Broadcast vs. consumer. Gh3 has nothing to cannibalize because its in the consumer division. Not because af100 is "discontinued" (which it isnt. They only discontinue a product line if a: its being replaced b: its passed its time e.g. Dvx100b)

ETC ???

I didn't see it in the leaked specs or in the video. Sure hope they didn't drop that feature.

Cheers,
Pete

im sure theres a lot of features there carried over from gh2. also things from other cameras like miniature mode, panoramic mode, filters, etc. etc.

Soundtrack? What soundtrack?

Oh, you mean you guys have the sound turned on when you watch camera test and sample video clips?

Unless the clip is about the sound (which, unfortunately, it almost never is), I always turn the sound off before watching camera tests and sample video clips.

Big Tip: If you want to see what a video actually looks like, turn off the soundtrack!

I know you already know this, I'm just joking. Kinda. :-)
It's the truth though.
Music has a strong influence and in instances like this can be more of a distraction.
When judging something strictly on image, I need no audible stimulation to assist my visual assessment.
Also, wouldn't it just be more time/space efficient this way?
It'd take time off the editing process, so uploads will be shared sooner.
The file size will be reduced (maybe just by a little, but still).

You know what feature would be unreal? A type of dynamic ETC allowing you scale to exactly the part of the sensor you want to use. Have a c-mount lens, or a S16 lens vignetting on you and don't want to do a drastic 1:1 crop? Just scale down to exactly the size you need... UGH... that would be absolutely killer.

Um isn't that digital zoom that we see on cheap video cameras? Basically the same concept really. Digitally the used area of the sensor is scaled to extend the zoom range. In camcorders however they usually go beyond the 1 to 1 range and the sensors are sometimes only HD to begin with.

I just watched the "Genesis" video posted by Philip Bloom http://vimeo.com/49420579# and now I'm exited about this camera again. The previous leaked video was awful. I mean, video quality and sound (had to turn it down). I watch a lot of videos online that are 720p and heavily compressed and still look gorgeous but the leaked promo video reminded me of the GH1 with the "mud" issue. Nevertheless it was very informative since it shows all the professional features included in the 3rd generation of this camera. I own a hacked GH2 and I'm very happy with it, but I'm looking forward to buying this little beast. Hopefully this time Panasonic is going to send enough quantities to the US from day one.

Yeah, but we're talking a very small incremental change. Not 100% / 200% digital zoom capability. Just perhaps scaled in 15-20% or until the vignette is taken care of. I would be all over that.

I think you answered your own question: it's not the same thing as digital zoom, not if you keep it from going beyond 1:1. The way that he described it, it seems like you could go anywhere between using the full frame (like the current non-ETC mode), down to 1:1 (like current ETC mode). Digital zoom is different in that it's using interpolation to go beyond 1:1 mode, just "making up" extra resolution as it goes along. In what he describes, you shouldn't lose any of the inherent resolution quality because you don't go beyond what the physical pixels can produce.

It's an interesting idea. I like it, and was thinking about something similar a few days ago: what if in the full frame cameras you could select sensor size presets, like Super 35, Super 16, Super 8, 1/2", 1/3", etc (down to whatever size 1:1 pixel resolution would allow it to go). That would be really cool because it would add some incredible flexibility not only in lens compatibility (imagine being able to use just about any 16mm or broadcast lens that physically fits the mount) but also in variable crop factor.

Even though it probably would not take much work to make a feature like this, it probably will take quite a while before we see it happen, if ever. How long did it take before Panasonic broke new ground with ETC, which is now being copied by other manufacturers? Still, competition will drive them to keep coming up with new features, so we could eventually see something like this. ETC may just have been the first step down this road.

The new Sony VG900 does this, supposedly. If you put an APS-C lens on it, it will automatically crop down to that size, so you don't get vignetting.
