GH2 GH3: Panny: YES uncompressed HDMI, firmware focus peaking....

How many people are seriously.. seriously... going to buy a very expensive external recorder and deal with the complications to workflow to actually do this for marginal (at best) quality improvement?
+10 000
and for this pricepoint, they got RAW with BMCC, 1k more They got RAW+CCD with Digital Bolex ( soon )
DSLR workflow have to be simple and funny. That's not the cam that make a shot "serious".
a good team, the profesionalism of the team, the lighting and also powerful, the actors performances and the directing IMO.

And once they get it into their hands, you're going to see the bitching commence (and probably lots of barely graded RAW footage).

For me the biggest improvement and the proof that panny is understanding its market is the wireless monitoring on tablets. I always jib to get a dedicated monitor but i always want to see my pictures biggers especially when i'm using a Glidecam whith my GH1, and now it seem that it's possible. It's also very useful for the script, the director, the focus puller... I think, we have not realize yet how it will make our shots easier.

Seriously, can you imagine, the all team can watch the shot in live on their own ipad/iphone/Androidphone or tablet ! it's a new way to work together !

  • The GH3 has multi aspect ratio sensor! But don’t get too excited as the multi aspect function is disabled in the original firmware.

It's statements like this that make me completely dismiss anything that these rumor sites ever say. It's pointless to follow them because they have zero idea what they're talking about.

A "multi aspect ratio sensor" means that it is physically larger than the standard. How do you add physical silicon via a firmware update? It's ridiculous.

Hope I'm wrong, but my suspension is the WiFi will be much less useful than many desire.

It'll all come down to the App they release for it and what data the firmware allows to be sent/received. If they had an open SDK then you could have sorts of Apps developed for it. If I were running the show at Panasonic I'd have an SDK out and available right now so programmers can start to look at it and work. Then I'd get the most serious developers (who have a track record and commit to developing Apps) the first round of GH3 cameras before the release date, so that on release date there are at least a few quality Apps.

This issue of multi-aspect being present but not enabled comes from Giulio Sciorio, who was part of the conference with the Panny reps, and seems to have been discussed while they were setting up the hangout before it went live.

However, I think you're right. I'd wager there may have been a miscommunication between the two parties, one asking about true multi-aspect (as in the GH2) and the other answering about cropped aspects (already in the GH3 according to the available specs).

For what it is, this camera is a winner for me- EXCEPT for the lack of focus peaking. It maybe that the other improvements in the EVF will improve focusing enough to be usable without peaking... If not, the lack of peaking maybe a non-starter for me ;-( .

I cannot use my GH2 effectively handheld or in any kind of run and gun situation due to the difficulty with focusing manually.

Panasonic- please include a focus peaking function for the cameras release.

I was inclined to order this camera sight unseen, but this missing feature has caused me to hold off.

+1 rumor sites are essentially blogs that just blab anything to get hits on their site. hate them.

Generally I agree with you, but most (not all) of the info in the first post of this thread is from the horses mouth (Panny reps answering questions on video).

(Panny reps answering questions on video).
Perhaps, but again -- it depends on who is answering! Remember that when the BlackMagic camera was announced, all the reps at the booth were saying that it had a Four Thirds sensor. It didn't, they were just wrong. And they were saying that you could mount "Canon EF" or "Zeiss ZF" lenses. That was just plain wrong also, it only has Canon EF mount. Sometimes "reps" don't know what they're talking about, or they repeat what they think they were told, sometimes they just get it wrong, and sometimes specs change.

If you were talking to the engineer who built the camera, then I would believe it. If you were talking to the Japanese product manager who shepherded the camera through the development process, then I would believe it. If you find it in a published brochure on the manufacturer's site, I would believe it. Anyone else, well, I would take ANYTHING they say with a big grain of salt, especially anything that's said on the very first day of the very first release.

As far as I'm concerned, this is all "blah blah blah" until I can read it in the owner's manual or test it in actual use. The only thing that matters (to me) is what the product actually DOES, not what anyone (and I do mean ANYONE) says it does.

I initially jumped for joy when I read about the WiFi functionality- conjuring up visions of real-time live wireless monitoring jumping in my head.
If I interpreted the interview that Andrew did correctly, I recall hearing the Panasonic spokesperson mention about a latency issue. That's consistent with my experience of certain wirelss protocols. So unless the monitoring is in EXACT sync with the recorder, it'll not be useful for precise recording of action in progress. just as a rough framing montor. We'll, it'll be useful as a 'NannyCam' at least and of course, Start/Stop/focus ;)
The future is not quite here, but it is near!

The GH3 “unofficially” has uncompressed video out.

I'm confused. What else could it be other than uncompressed? I'm not aware of any TV or monitor in the world that can decode a compressed video signal. It's always decompressed before coming out of a device.

You are correct, Jim. The GH2 puts out a "clean" (no overlays) and "uncompressed" HDMI signal...it's just that the signal is non-standard (an exact 60 fields-per-second instead of 59.97 and broken 4:2:0 colorspace. I highly doubt that the GH3's HDMI output will be any different. In fact, if I can set it to NOT be clean, I would be happier, as I hate losing the information display when I hit record while monitoring.

It appears the GH3' recordings can be started from WiFi, but not stopped.

Users can start video recording from a smartphone or tablet*.
* Recording time needs to be set in advance.
