GH2 GH3: Panny: YES uncompressed HDMI, firmware focus peaking....

STILL NEED A GH3 PREFIX FOR THREADS!

43rumors has this
interesting news. Here are the highlights (a mix of stuff from 43Rumors AND my review of the video):

  • The GH3 “unofficially” has uncompressed video out. [At 35:04] They don't know how clean it is. Meaning while its a hardware feature its not one that will be advertised by Panasonic.
  • The GH3 has multi aspect ratio sensor! But don’t get too excited as the multi aspect function is disabled in the original firmware.
  • WiFi mode will allow wireless monitoring of video or stills [At 35:04] with a tablet or smart phone.
  • NO SDK for wifi development. (BIG disappointment). But they encourage people to hack.
  • WiFi mode will transfer either raw or jpegs to a tablet or smart phone but if you shoot raw+jpeg you can’t just transfer jpegs, you must transfer both.
  • WiFi mode can automatically upload jpegs to social media.
  • Wifi wil l also let you control zoom with X lenses.
  • Panny w ill have some rebates running on body + lens purchases around release time, but sounds like no formal bundles.

UPDATE:
Uematsu confirmed at
Techradar that “focus peaking could be added with a firmware upgrade“:

Speaking exclusively to TechRadar at Photokina 2012, Uematsu acknowledged that there have been many requests for focus peaking on the Panasonic GH3 to indicate the sharpest areas in a scene when a video is being recorded. He went on to say that this, and 'zebras' (a type of exposure warning) could be added with a firmware upgrade.

However, he went on to say that adding features with a firmware upgrade takes a level of resources that isn't currently available, and the company would have to assess the demand.

In other words,
BE VERY VOCAL TO PANASONIC ABOUT FOCUS PEAKING if you want it!

Along with all the new features already in the camera, it's all very good signs that Panasonic IS listening. They really should release an SDK though.

Lots of good news for sure. One question, "WiFi mode will allow wireless monitoring of video or stills with a tablet or smart phone." - does this mean a tablet could take the place of an external monitor for real live previewing or does this mean only viewing the files after uploading them to said tablet or phone?

It's live (hence the ability to remote zoom/focus)!

SmallCameraBigPicture has the video interview of Panasonic USA reps confirming "uncompressed" video out and peaking possible with future firmware.

That's the same video that's in the 43rumors link in the first post. I don't remember Panny mentioning focus peaking in that video (although I could have missed it). That came from techradar.

Oops. My bad. I should've said the mentioning of focus peaking is actually in the comments on the smallcamerabigpicture site.

Ugh... stupid rumors make me want this thing now.

ALthough I already kinda knew this, what it looks like is that they've handed the PV Community a camera base that's technically better than what the GH2 was to start with, and applying the same hack efforts to the GH3 may turn out something much more ridiculous than the GH2 could be due to the original design.

I bet you can count on a very very very early and almost arbitrary "firmware fix" as soon as the camera comes out... so that it can be dissected from like week one.

what does "uncompressed video out" mean??? 4:2:2 color without weird cadence? Panny can't/don't seem to want to clear this up yet. I'm guessing they prbly don't know themselves what they'll go with for the release model. Or they'll let the hackers pry 4:2:2 out of it.

I highly doubt GH3 will come with legit 4:2:2 out. not for $1300. They will probably save that for a proper micro 4/3 video cam, maybe the successor to the AF100.

How many people are seriously.. seriously... going to buy a very expensive external recorder and deal with the complications to workflow to actually do this for marginal (at best) quality improvement?

Most people buying the GH3 would likely opt for the inexpensive external recorder, if any at all.

Remains to be seen how burly the new high bitrate modes are, but we both know they simply won't be good enough for some.

Personally I wouldn't use an external recorder on the GH, but 4:2:2 out is just icing on the cake, for the occasions that I do need it. Just makes the camera that much more attractive, especially up against such as MkIII, D600/800.

But yet Canon consumer HDV cameras have had 4:2:2 uncompressed via HDMI for years. In fact a lot of cameras with HDMI are true uncompressed because they are usually attached directly to the DSP before the video hits the encoder. My Panasonic HMC-40 which yes is in the pro division has uncompressed 4:2:2 via HDMI. I believe most of the Panasonic consumer video cameras do as well.

As far as I know the GH cameras are the only cameras on the planet with jacked up HDMI output.

Yes the quality will be nice but even if we do get 4:2:2 uncompressed raw DSP output chances are it will be in a 60i wrapper like most other HDMI on cameras have. So we would still need to perform a pulldown which is not a very fun addition to the workflow.

Well I personally wouldn't mind using my Ninja to record directly in ProRes. It would be a great move from Panasonic to give uncompressed 422 from a dslm. It would give even more power to the people who already have the required gear, you know :-)

Why do you keep spreading this FUD? Show me one Canon DSLR with a proper HDMI output signal.

I am referring to video cameras. Yes it is true other DSLRs don't have a proper HDMI output either. Not trying to spread FUD as you call it. Just don't agree with the belief that some people may have that it will never happen because cheaper cameras would never do it.
