GH2 GH3 on the way

In an interview at photoradar.com, Panasonic Director of DSC Business unit Ichiro Kitao said,

the company’s next priority is the GH series and bringing out a successor to the GH2.
The GH series is Panasonic’s premier camera line and is very important to the business...Though they have some advantages over optical viewfinders, Kitao said he recognises that electronic viewfinders (EVFs) are still not widely popular and improving them is a key target – especially for the Panasonic GH3.

Note to Panasonic: please worry less about the EVF and worry more about clean, recordable HDMI out (with audio); full manual audio gain control; and a headphone jack. A weather-sealed body and a fast, quiet micro 4/3 parfocal power zoom lens would be nice too. I'd pay D7000 prices (or more) for a camera like that. And I'd pay Voigtlander prices for a fast, quiet parfocal power zoom.

I wouldn´t hold your breath. You can hardly purchase the gh2 yet ! The most interesting thing is they will split the gf line .

While we wait 6-12 months to be able to buy a "GH3" in the US ...

... check out the great results folks such as Glenn Przyborski and Sam Sielen are getting out of their GH2 cams today:

Gosh knows I can't wait until there's a weather-sealed pro GH2-like cam with a built-in headphone jack, but whatever cam you have access to today, just get out there and shoot!

Cheers.

Bigger sensor is NOT going to happen - it wouldn't be an M4/3 camera! It wouldn't work with M4/3 lenses! I AM hoping for a NEW sensor, with better specs though.

Not surprising the GH3 is the next in line for the G series, since they're about to release the G3 and have just announced the GF3. Would still say it would be quite a while away even in Japan.

A new sensor wouldn't surprise me, the G3 got a very nice upgrade, though the GF3 seems to have the same old sensor for some strange reason.

Of course it's on the way. But doubt it will available before the end of 2011. Maybe specced though.

GH4 on the way too. And GH5. Although I hear that the GH6 is in doubt due to weak sales of the GH5.:2vrolijk_08:

I'm not expecting any revolution in DSLR area next season. Panasonic and Sony already have AF and FX series, seriously packed and targeted to professional audience. Canon is developing their answer. So put yourself in Pana marketologist's shoes. What else would you add to the video side of GH2 not to intrude AF's territory? It's quite a challenge. GH series is already much too close.

And Sony and Canon are in the same position. The market has been cut into niches and more pro features will most likely enhance the pro toys. I'm expecting cosmetic improvements rather than innovative steps in DSLR video. Companies are interested in enhancing features of their pro models targeted specifically to pro audience. And DSLR video is doomed to stay just a more or less serious bonus to the still camera targeted to casual video shooter. It'll be always a step behind. The times of video DSLR revolution are over. No free lunch anymore.

Only one thing really, and it's a compliment to the AF as opposed to a competitor....

Lenses. Lots and lots of lenses. The upcoming Leica m4/3 24mm f1.4 is exactly what they need to compete and continue to steal market share from Nikon and Canon, who have a much deeper lineup of lenses. They need a really fast wide lens (like a 12 or 14mm f1.4 or better) and a long fast lens (like a 14-140mm fixed f2.8).

I can dream, right?

I personally think its too soon to release a new GH...the GH2 is still young.
I wouldnt expect much of a upgrade going by panasonics record.
New sensor would be nice...one that doesnt have banding.
Also one thing....bring back the old batteries Panny!

I can't see them passing up the opportunity to market the "3" as "3-D"; i.e. "GH3-D".
Marketed as a 3-D cam, with 2-D functionality.

I wonder if it's possible for them to lock out a potential GH3 hack.

I recently bought a GH2 and wouldn't be 'upset' if a GH3 came out relatively soon (later this year).
Mainly cause i am amazed/happy with the quality of the GH2. On the otherhand, don't be like 'other companies' who wait forever to update their main cam.
Keep the leading edge.

Well the GF2 only has 8 month in the market and now has been replaced by the GF3, the G2 was replaced by the G3, and the G10 (what? 6 months?) was replaced by the G2 inventory ;), remember the Lumix is a product from the Consumer Division the lifespan is almost yearly, not so with the Professional Division, of course is they announce a GH3 before Sony and Canon products would be a error. So the GH3 is certainly for the next year, and i don´t think this would be a bomb of replacement for the GH2 just a refresh and some keys upgrades as Higher isos, nice usable HDMI out.

Last year Panasonic spoke about the GH2 as a niche but now see the potential and now is the Flagship! ha!

Lenses, lenses, lenses!! I think Panny is not doing so bad lately, but is in need of a really faster Video Zoom lens (but with constant aperture of course) bewteen 14-50mm or 24-70mm with OIS and with focus continuous as the 14-140mm , the recently announced 25mm look like a nice lens, the lovely 7-14mm is on revision (maybe faster? hope so), maybe a good Macro at 50mm or 100mm and we´re done ;)

My two cents.
