GH3 GH3 min-ireview at LL

I saw this in the review.

"Non-EU models have no such limitation, other than that due to using FAT32, no one file can be more than 4GB and no one shot can be more than 8GB (two automatically linked files)."

This is the second time I've read this, and it worries me. There is no such "two file" limit built-in to the FAT32 file system. And certainly the GH2 exhibits no such behavior. I can record and span as long as I have card space and battery. So if the GH3 is limited to spanning two files at a time, that's an artificial limitation imposed by Panasonic.

I do hope that's not the case, as that limitation would prevent me from upgrading to the GH3. I simply cannot have a camera stop recording on it's own like that.

There will be a hack to remove that.... Simple

Also film makers have been getting around that with Canon dslr for years...

Don't assume that there will hack. The firmware could be encrypted. It could just be too much of a hassle for someone to spend their time trying to hack it, like a lot of the other camera systems out there.

Remember this is an incomplete firmware pre-production camera . And there must be some logical reasons why it's been postponed.

10000% there will be a hack, just like GH1 & 2

How? The only Canon guy I know is still limited to about 15 minutes of record time.

Yes the limitation is still there, I mean users who use Canon in various normal and pro environments work with this 'limitation' and have still been able to deliver very nice projects.

Personally I feel like it would be a huge mistake for Panasonic to make the GH3 locked. One of the key reasons why the GH2 was so popular was the massive amount of buzz generated in the film community over the hacking of the GH2. We are all used to hacking and it is second nature for all of us at this stage. Taking that away now would be a massive mistake and could virtually kill the GH3. The GH3 would still be an awesome camera no doubt but the feeling of blocking it now would just give people a bad taste and they could say forget it.

Both the GH1 and GH2 were very nice cameras but they didn't really take off on a large scale until they were hacked. At least that is the way I saw it. Panasonic was surprised by how popular the GH2 was and a huge part of that shocking popularity was the hacking.

For me that's just no good. Stage performances, wedding ceremonies, business seminars...they all need continuous recording without artificial stops. If the GH2 exhibits this behavior and cannot be corrected with a hack, it will unfortunately not be an option for me. And that I would not like, as there are so many other improvements over the GH2 that would suite my needs very well.

maybe we should complain when the product is actually out, hm?

I could be worried over nothing. The camera is only on firmware 0.5 and I assume it will be released with firmware 1.0.

On the other hand, we know Panasonic reads through these forums. If there really is an artificial recording limitation imposed on non-EU models (as I've read from two different sources now), I'd love to make sure that get's rectified before the camera is released. If taking that issue up early helps get that done, it's time and type well spent in my view.
