First, I believe there may be a photo limit for posting in the forums so I hope the moderator will make an exception here as several people have asked me to post photos and a review for the new GH3 “Jake” CAGE. First, I got these for around $550 each (Jake from Personal-View); shipped from the UK as they are the only custom fit GH3 cages on the market that I know of. What do you get for the price? An AMAZINGLY well built cage that truly locks in the GH3!

HANDLE – Note that the handle in the photo can be mounted anywhere, or removed. I chose to put it on the left side (like the Red Scarlet rigs) but of course you can place it right on top or anywhere else.

HDMI CABLE LOCK – I wasn’t expecting an HDMI cable lock but it came with the cage and it works wonderfully. Check the photo below.

BATTERY ACCESS - The battery compartment of the GH3 is an odd shape so a custom fit cage is a must if you don’t want to remove your cam every time to change batteries; messing up your follow focus alignment, or possibly dropping something etc… I prefer my cameras to stay in their cages as if they’re a permanent fixture and the Jake cage delivers.

SD CARD ACCESS – Once again, the cage accommodates the larger SD card door to provide easy access.

ROD SUPPORT – The cage also comes with 15mm rod support and it can be raised or lowered easily for different height cameras!

HOT SHOE MOUNT – The cage also came with a hot shoe piece and screw to lock the camera down even more; however, I found you had to move the GH2 a little more forward on the cage in order to get the screw to line up with the hole on the top so I didn’t use it, I found it doesn’t really change how sturdy the camera is.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT – What also makes this cage great, is that in addition to the screw that mounts your camera, you’ll notice two additional screws on the front that you can move in and out to really secure your camera. Not only does this act as an ant-twist, but it puts enough pressure on the camera mount where I find everything stays nice and tight. Just want to make the point this camera does NOT move or twist once in this cage! It's extremely secure.

OVERALL BUILD – Everything about this cage screams quality, from the extra tidbits like hot shoe mount, HDMI lock and adjustable rod mount, the handle, and the sleek rounded edges and contour of the cage.

NOTE!!! Even though this cage was obviously built for a GH3, it’s versatile enough where you CAN use it with other DSLR cameras and it would still allow SD card and battery access!!

Tried a GH2 in it at all? Considering one if I can part with my gini and use both bodies in the cage - Looks amazing. As top notch as can come!

Looks great, you mention that it may hold other camera models. Do you have any Canon DSLR that you can try in there?

Awesome cage. Link to purchase?

Brent,

Thanks for a great review!

I may just have to buy at least one of these cages, but still hoping for a more compact version, so like you did previously, I just sent a message to D/Focus Systems.

A couple questions: How much does the bare cage weigh? And how much with the rod supports?

Thanks again,
Bern

I already assemples both cages but total weight with rod supports and handle was 1.8lbs. The rod support and handle are both pretty heavy so without them, the cage itself feels very light.

I'd edited my post whilst you were replying, it looks as though it won't fit a GH3 with a battery grip on, can you confirm whether a GH3 with grip will fit or not?

Can the cage be used without the rails - are there 1/4 20 holes on the bottom for different mounting plates?

As a side note: While the cage may not accommodate the GH3 Battery Grip ( in the current iteration), I imagine that many will be adding an external battery supply anyway, via the DC Coupler.
Mine will likely be a Switronix JetPack mounted under the Cage.
