GH3 GH3 Help

Hi Guys,

I have been looking at the GH3 for a while. I HAVE some canon fd primes and Nikon Primes ready waiting for this camera.

I currently used the Canon 60D. I was thinking of upgrading this or using it as a B CAM. I am selling my ex1 to fund this.

My options were

1) Buy an FS100 - Body Only
2) Stick with the Canon 60d and invest in better glass
3) GH3 - As video camera as I have some great vintage glass.

What i Need IS feedback.. What do you guys think of the gh3? I have heard great things but problems with LCD - Green shift and problems with recording.

Is the image superior to the gh2? Is the GH3 worth It over the gh2?

I haven't seen much footage. Can anybody link me to some sexy looking footage.

Thanks again

Sorry If I have asked the same questions that have been answered before.

Thanks Guys

Hi there,

I have done extensive shooting with the 60D as well and made the change about 2 months ago to the GH3. So let me tell you my experience :)

The 60D has a great body, better LCD (much higher resolution) and just feels more 'bulky' like you are actually having something in your hand. Now the GH3 might feel bulky compared to the GH2, but I still think it's too small and feels like toy in your hand. Also the 60D's top LCD screen is extremely handy and there is none on the GH3. The 60D also wins the stills department.

But, what really counts for me is the image quality of the video and hence the reason why I sold the 60D. I was getting tired of soft, non HD, aliasing video everytime I came home and watched the footage back on my 27" 2560x1440 monitor. I was almost always disapointed with the results.
With the GH3, I no longer have this problem. The footage holds up great on this resolution and is full of detail and there is not nearly as much aliasing going on as with the 60D. I think that they're about the same in DR and the range of how much color correction you can apply to the footage until it starts to break down, but the resolution and the noise patterns (very pleasing to the eye on the GH3) do it for me.

The GH3 is about comparable to the 60D when it comes to battery life and operation and has a usable viewfinder during shooting video but it's not great. It also has 60P/1080p, full 1080p HDMI out with no delay when pressing record, autofocus that works pretty good, racking focus by just touching the touch screen, etc.

I have no experience with the GH2, but I hate the design personally. Also the battery doesn't seem to nearly last long enough and need to be 'hacked' to deliver the same IQ as the GH3 out of the box.

Your last question, I dont know if you consider this 'sexy footage' but here is a link to a short film I have been working on for some weeks and was shot on a GH3.
(download for better 1080p quality)

Good luck. Hope it helped :)

Hey,

Thanks for the reply.. It does look really nice footage was nice and sharp. What is the internal recording. I can imagine how good it will be with the hack. Plus no record limit in the gh3.. So with the gh3 its full 1080p meaning no dropping to 480p?

I would keep my 60d mainly for photography. I am still looking at the fs100., But that will worth not much soon.. as price drops the F3 has dropped a lot.

What lenses have you been using on the gh3? I have a few FD lenses I am looking forward to use.

So ergonomically and build is better than the gh3 (60D). Yeah I use a monitor most of the time got an older lilliput upgrading soon. Agree the image quality isn't too sharp was when It first came out but our eyes have been spoilt by alexa, red, f3 etc. Love the idea of wifi with the GH3.. I have been hearing about the 7dmkii which would be a good investment. But that good be lightyears away.

Few quick questions.. What is it like in lowlight compared to 60d. I wouldnt take my 60d passed 640 iso really.

What are the internal recording options?

ThANKS AGAIN

GH3 outputs 1080p through HDMI in stead of 60D's 480p.

Lenses used were modern:
- Panny 14mm 2.5 / 20mm 1.7 / olympus 45mm 1.8

I would take the GH3 to ISO 800 and even 1600 without much problems.

Interal recording options are:
- AVCHD 24mbps bitrate (not entirely sure but you can read about it online)
- .mov 50mbps bitrate (the one I used in the short)
- All-I 72 mbps.

The GH3 is made of alluminium alloy though and is 'weather sealed' so I'm not saying the build is better than the 60D's, but i just like the body of the 60D more because it's bigger, bulkier and has a better LCD + a very handy top LCD. The GH3 feels like a mini 7D.
