hello , after using nikon d5100 for a while for video..i decided to move up. my initial target was set to gh3I must admit that it is a bit too expensive the Whole materr, body and lens thoug. Trying to find a good 2 hand one but still difficiult. So i am trying to make a step backward and considering again gh2, which was my original target. Also i have found that g6 seems to be competitor to gh2. My question is how wohrty is the extra money for gh3 instead of a cheaper gh2/g6 which will let me use more money on lens perhaps? plus just find out that nikon has made a good camera with d5200 ang getting even more confused. what is your opinion about all of these camera, thinking in term of value for money?

if you're a hobbyist on a budget, then, imho, getting gh3 over a hacked gh2 makes no sense.
if you're a hobbyist with no budget restrictions, then you could probably get gh3 - it costs twice as much as gh2/g6, has similar image quality but much better handling and ergonomics.
if you're a pro, then the price difference between the two should pay itself on a first paid gig.
but honestly, if I were you, I'd look into d5200 - it's a very nice little camera with video as sharp as in GH series and dynamic range GH cameras will probably never get :p
Also, most likely, you already have a couple of nikon lenses.

G6 is not released and again we're comparing it to other cameras ? The d5200 shoots great video ...minus two quirks. You can't change aperture while in liveview...and it's got the fpn problem....although I've seen some great videos from the 5200 and couldnt' see any. The gh2 can only be bought used...and is expensive . Panasonic didn't make enough ! The gh3 is a great camera but will be coming down in price over the next year. You will have to wait 2 months until the g6 is released and it's a known quantity to compare it. If you have nikon lenses...then the answer has already been provided.

GH3 is not expensive.......

I know people who never used a camera in their life buy a Canon 7d for $1500 and start making money....

My opinion is this, buy the most expensive, learn your craft and you will be able to make money. Shooting pictures, video, documentary it doesn't matter. Heck I know people who bought $2000 Af100 cameras and are making descent money doing interviews and commercial programs. Point is I truly believe that in this world of "show" especially the commercial industry cameras do matter. Put up an ad and say you have a GH3 then a 5d mark III, or a Nikon 5200, you will get more calls from the one with the most recognized camera.

I had a 10K budget video and the producer would NOT do it if it wasn't shot on RED. Doesn't matter what other capable camera I had, this one instance opened my eyes that it's all about "show" in a BS industry.

I would buy the GH3 if you can afford it, otherwise I would buy the G6 which has many of the features of the GH3 and a few unique ones like blue focus peaking. ( killer feature to have to get sharp focus on the fly )

The GH3 is still cheaper than all of the Canon higher end DSLR cameras. Besides compared to what video cameras used to cost this thing is a steal. Just a couple of years ago if you wanted a decent video camera you paid $3,000.00 for a 3 chip video camera. Even consumer grade Canon video cameras that could shoot 24p were around this price point. The cost of these cameras is already insanely low to the point of being a joke to those of us who paid a fortune in the past for a fraction of the quality. My first camera was a Canon XL1 which I paid $4,500.00 for and isn't worth squat compared to my GH3.

+100

I remember Hpx-170 I believe was like $4k+ then the P2 cards were another $1k, so I was looking at $5k or more for an Hpx-170 which is a great camera but very different compared to newer technology.

Hopefully within a month or two I can buy the BMCC MFT mount , I really really am doing everything so I can pay my bills, $ for the family and afford this camera when it is hopefully released in July.

I figure BMCC will cost me about $4000 with extras just to get up and running and obviously more in the near future for all gadgets, but I at least can make some money in the meantime.

Commercials , Music Videos, Documentaries, etc.

lol,

I always buy her and my daughter good stuff, hence the reason I'm a little low on cash right now. But yeah Gh3,G6 ,GH2 are all good cameras, I am just making the jump as I am working with professionals in the industry and even though I still consider myself a beginner I still want to be somewhat close to the guys next to me shooting on C300 and Red Scarlet, Epic. GH3 is a very good camera, but BMCC will allow somethings simply not possibly.

Look at this footage from BMCC

do you still have to go out of video mode and into still mode every time you want to change aperture on the Nikon. This is a major issue and very frustrating.Look into it, it may have been fixed via firmware update. If it hasn't been fixed, I wouldn't touch it.

And while your budget may be stretched at a GH3, it's definately not an expensive camera for what you get. People getting into video are spoilt for great cheap cameras these days.

i still have my d5100, and i got bored becaude os fpoor quality and of liveview limitation, who will not let me change settings.but mainly for poor quality. i have already a couple of lens nikon, kit ones..I wonder the limitation of the software adncontrols is exaxtly tehe same in 5200. is it? for the rest my use of videomaking is for my activity, (clips for music) and for works..making little presentations of professionals workers. but the later it is still in development...i onlu gave some potential customer at the moment. gh3 is really expensive 1500 euro with lens, kit ones. another question is. gh lens kit are better than nikon lens kit?beacuse if i go for d5200 most probably i will want to buy some nice lens.. so, for what i understand, if i decide to do not go for gh3, (and wait may be next year for a 2 hand one) the choiice will be better d5200 than the well reknown gh2?

actually the liveview limitation as vtwiz underline is very frustrating, boring.also i have exprienced that i will need absolutely extra toys.for example something that allow me to see the lcd screen while recording movie. if i am out in a sunny day, lcd view is useless.can't see nothing in it, and of course the analog view it is not working, this could be diffferent in a mirrorless, both becuase the viewfinder will Always work, and because i suppose the lcd screen will be much more visible than d5200.what you think about?
