GH3 GH3 EVF problem - GH3 owners Please Read!

Because peaking won't help much when you're looking at a poorly designed GH3 LCD anywhere outside a dark room. You want to shoot shallow DOF, then invest in a good EVF like a DP4, rather than waste time waiting for GH3 peaking...or shoot F22 with a wide angle. No-one is "happy" with AF or a blurry EVF, but I'm realistic about what you get for $1200.

I have a DP4 but the peaking function is nowhere near as good as a camera generated peaking. The DP4 only has the relatively low res output of the HDMI to find edges off. In camera peaking can work with the image data before its downsampled and so generally gives a much better result. Peaking in the form of a coloured edge is visible even if you have a blurry EVF as you can see the coloured part of the image and know that it's in focus. The high contrast peaking colour is also much easier to see even when outside. It really stands out.
Im realistic about what $1200 gets too. G6? Nex5n? Both with peaking. The Magic Lantern guys were able to add it to all the Canon DSLR's for FREE!!!!!
Dont worry, I'm not wasting any time waiting for Peaking. I shoot most days, the GH3 is just looking less and less attractive compared to what's out there now and it's only a 7month old camera.

I am shooting with a pair of NEX 6s, and MF lenses, and I use an iKan external monitor for macro and tilt lenses, for both video and stills. I am really interested in what cameras you feel are better than the GH3 (all my lenses will fit this via adapter). I have run up against the 29:45 clip limit once too often and am ready to move to a new camera, but what others do you have in mind?

I chose the NEX 6 bodies because I need stills capacity too but if there is another camera out there that can take Leica M and OM lenses that is better for video, I will just keep one of the NEX bodies and get the other body. Please advise; I will be grateful.

The NEX 6 would be my pick at the moment as well...in 6 months time who knows. On my wish-list for the next sub $1500 cam I would have XLR's, a good EVF and built-in 6 stop ND's....oh yeah and we'd better add in peaking as well.

Concerning the EVF problem:

I can pretty much confirm the difficulty in getting the lineup of the eye with the "channel" or proper position to see the EVF image clearly was eyeglass prescription related in my case.

Cataracts were just beginning to interfere with my vision, I could still see to drive safely and to focus cameras but had a heckuva time with the GH3 EVF. I think in reducing the size of it some from the GH2 made it problematic for some eyeglass wearers (or anyone with enough astigmatism).

I had cataract surgery on my non dominant eye a few weeks ago, the other eye is scheduled for about a week and a half. But with the left eye now seeing an astigmatism corrected sharp distance image, and with the diopter adjust on my GH3 set for eyeglass corrected vision in the right eye (I'm wearing frames with the left lens removed and the right lens still in place for maximum safe vision while driving), I can see focus very well in the EVF with the left eye. This seems to be because now I can easily position my eye on the correct axis without the distortion of my eyeglass prescription to see the image properly.

Can't wait to have the right eye done. My insurance (Medicare and TriCare) would pay for the surgery and a "standard" lens implant. In my case there is a LOT of astigmatism in the left eye so I opted for an astigmatism correcting (Toric) lens implant that cost $900 extra per eye (and I was resisting the price of the Olympus 12mm f2!).

But anyway, the GH3 EVF should no longer be a problem for me, for the next couple of weeks I'm doing fine using the non-dominant eye for focusing.
