Slowly getting together my GH3 ENG style rig. Attached is the rig in "beta" testing, still a number of things to add, mod & change. Put this up on twitter (still new to twitter) & it got some hits. SmallHD reposted on their facebook page & that got a bunch of likes.

A bunch of people were interested, so I put together a very simple lens test (IE: far from ideal lens test / comparison)

Let me know your thoughts!

Rig:
GH3 (got the last one in stock from Norman camera in Michigan)
Canon 16x8 ENG lens
SmallHD DP4 EVF
Tilta baseplate (love this thing, got a good deal from Team Tilta, e-mail me if you need an invite)
Lanparte v-mount battery pinch (from Ozirigpro who had an amazing deal for DVXUsers)
2/3" B4 to m43 adapter
12pin ENG lens to D-tap adapter (to power servo)

how many stops you lose with that adapter?
No light loss with the adapter, but 1-2 stops (brain is tired) when you engage the 2x. When you're in ETC mode, no need for the 2x, thus no loss. When you're not in ETC mode you have to have the doubler on & you lose a good amount of light. But I think the camera is still pretty good st higher ISO, so even w/ the light loss it is still very usable.

Lens opens to f/1.8, but I think there is some really nasty CA going on (or something else, again, tired brain), but things look nicer at f/2.8.

Nice, would love to see some footage.

Will post some better footage in the future.

PS I found a Fujinon lens from a local shooter that I personally like more, so this Canon is for sale, check out for sale forum if you're interested.

Very interesting rig. I just wonder what's the point? If you need ENG, shoot with a ENG camera. Not much point in using a large sensor in an ENG situation. But very creative rig.

That rig looks extremely well balanced if a little front heavy?
How're you going for handles, or are you just supporting by hand?

Glad to see the pinch has lived up to your expectations!

Really fantastic. Quick question.... Does the battery mount power the GH3? Looks like it's 7.2 out.

I need the adapter from Panasonic, which I haven't found in stock yet.

Is the Canon lens an HD lens? or SD?

I remember seeing a video from AbelCine on a comparison of the SD/HD ENG lenses on a GH2, and in some shots, the difference was quite striking.

Lens is SD.

I haven't seen anything from AbelCine, ENG lens & GH2, do you have a link? I did see something from them with a AF100. There was another test Derek Allen did that was excellent. They took a HD lens, a SD lens, the passive B4 m43 adapter & the AbelCine B4 m43 with 3CCD-to-1chip "correction." I couldn't see much difference between the lenses or adapters.

I don't think this lens is as nice as the ones they used, but while it might not be as sharp, it is in the same ballpark price range as the 14-140mm & is a lot more usable than the 14-140mm (IMHO).

Still a work in progress. A little front heavy right now, but should even out when I get some audio gear on the back end.

Only gotten about 5% of the use out of the battery pinch so far. Still need to get some cables / adapters to have the pinch power the camera, EVF, mixer & wireless receiver.

I like the battery pinch so far, but wish it went fully vertical. So I'm thinking of mounting it to a cheese plate or something, possibly with some industrial velcro. Is there any over heating concerns I should be mindful of?

If I was doing ENG 40 hours a week, I would only want to use a real ENG camera.

Since this is for freelance use, biggest reason is a real HD ENG camera is going to cost $20k to $30k+ (or $7k if you consider a HPX300 or HM700 an ENG camera). This rig is well under $5k.

Second reason is the GH2 & GH3 are the only cameras (that I know of) anywhere close to this price range that can switch between large sensor & ETC crop mode. Giving you a great mix of large sensor & small sensor all in one body.

Switch to ETC mode & you've got a chip close to that of most ENG cameras. Turn ETC off & you can get a much shallower DOF than what ENG cameras can produce.
