GH3 Gh3 Codecs-What have users found?

Kinda a crap grey day out so I'm just familiarizing myself to the Gh3.

What I see though is that I'm gonna stay away from the All-I codec and stick with the IBP.mov or Avchd thus far. Especially with the lumix lenses. THe All-I codec is kinda like the 5dMk3 where you get dancing artifacts compared to the IBP.mov and avchd. The IBP comes in averaging about 50mbs/sec.

Anybody else with the camera have input?

Also, I think the EVF kinda blows. Super hard to focus through it.

Sucks to hear about the EVF, but I can honestly say I never use that feature.... Maybe once or twice on the only shoot I did with my GH2 in 3 days....

I found a loupe on the Lcd Screen to be best. On the flip side all I ever used was the naked lcd on my Canon 60d which was excellent. So if the GH3 is at least like the 60d or better in terms of quality than I will be more than fine.

Dustylens,

My first GH3 clips were shot at 72mbps HD60p All-I, and as you experienced, the result was pitiful. Moire like I've not seen since the first Nikon DSLRs to shoot video. Thankfully, 50mbps FHD60 & 30p have restored my faith in the GH3.

Haven't used the EVF enough to form much of an opinion, but does seem improved over the GH2.

Kind Regards,
Dan

Yeah, I'll gonna test some more, but I'm seeing the 50mbps and Avchd looking better. Now I'm starting to hope a gh3 hack will come for the avchd.

Yup same here...I first put on a G lens and wow, holy aliasing. Overall color looks as good or better than my Gh2 but even with my old Nikons on it has some bad moire with patterns and stuff.
I am gonna give it a fair shot tomorrow, but a bit disappointing so far.
The EVF seem a little better.

Why for the AVCHD? It was my impression that the .mov was all around better. Especially for workflow-- I'm ready to kick AVCHD to the curb. Transcoding in FCP7 is annoying, and having to find, copy, and paste the .mts files for Premiere I imagine is a pain in the butt, too (I haven't gotten my feet too wet with Premiere yet.. trying to force myself to, though).

Were you using the All-I codec? It is sounding like it might be creating a lot more moire than the 50 mbps h.264 .mov mode.

In Premiere use the media browser to import clips...it automatically detects the folder structure and just shows you the clips so you don't have to dig.

Hmm.. outside of the moire/aliasing issues with All-I, did you guys see a difference between it and the AVCHD?

My GH3 arrived today and just did a quick test at full HD .MOV, 30p, 72mp, All-I. Looks great and edited great on my iMac, smooth as butter. And wow, so nice to bring .MOV into FCPX, no more avchd. Also, my EVF is fantastic! Much better then the GH2, everything crystal clear. I even tried to look through it at weird angles to reproduce the problems others have reported and no matter how I contorted the camera, there was no smearing and no fuzzy edges. Sorry to hear others are having issues. Strange, it really is a big leap from the gh2, and the new screen looks truly great! Shooting tomorrow with sound into the camera, headphones in camera, new codec, stunning video and great stills. Man this camera is a joy! (I used my new 25mm, 1.4 panny lens which I got for interviews.)
