GH3 GH3 bigger crop than Gh2 - dealbreaker?

hi folks,
I read somewhere that the GH3 crop is larger than that of the GH2 (1.8 versus 2.0). This means wide lenses appear less wide than when used on a GH2. I wonder if anyone has noticed this, and if it is significant enough to be a deal breaker? I'm a wide angle fanatic, and I always find myself wanting a wider lens.

Am on the fence right now -GH3 is available, but so is a 2nd Hand Gh2.

I havent noticed this myself. But I make docs so I avoid extreme wide angles as they give an unreal effect - destroy the illusion of reality. So the 12-35mm F2.8 lens is my workhorse lens.

If you are a 'wide angle nut' why are you using MFT in the first place? Does not make sense.

I don't have a GH3 yet but honestly I don't see this as a big deal. You may add 1mm to the look of your shots but typically this is very minor. Of course like the previous person said if you are a wide angle nut why use M4/3? I personally think even 12mm on the GH3 is wide enough for many situations and would argue that 12mm may even be a bit too wide. The widest I currently have on my GH2 is 14mm which may be a bit longer looking then 12mm on the GH3. Never had a problem with it. Of course I don't really know what you are shooting to understand why you require super wide angle. Personally I think what you gain with the GH3 way outweighs that one very minor ding. Then again I'm not a wide angle nut like yourself so I may not notice the impact as much as others. Of those who actually own and use the camera however I hear very little in terms of it being a problem. Most of the complaints come from those who don't even have a GH3 or may not have a M4/3 camera at all.

The difference is about 10%. Is that a make-or-break difference to you? Only you can decide that. If you want the ultimate wide, the GH2 will give you 10% more than the GH3 will. The Lumix 7-14 is what you want, if you want wide, and it'd be about equivalent to a 14-28 on a full frame camera on the GH3, and about a 12.6-25.2 equiv on a GH2.

Yes, there is this little difference - and yes, depending on what you're capture you'll see it. My way to handle this is: if I want to get as wide as possible I take my GH2 :-) if it doesn't matter or I'd like as much tele as possible I take my GH3. :-)
cheers,
Andi

I use the Oly 12mm over 50% of the time now - its exactly how I want to see the world and its my favorite lens, so YES the 10% will matter. If the Oly 12mm looks like 24mm (on FF), does this mean it will look like a 26.5mm on the GH3? Thats a bummer, and I got the 12mm precisely because I didn't like the 7-14.

But the other folks were right, the benefits outweight the cons so I went ahead and ordered the GH3 last night.

Good question as to why I'm on m43 in the first place, but I find the Canons to be so crappy overrated, and oversized (my opinion). I like wide, but not enough to justify lugging a 5D and struggling with it.

The 12mm on the GH3 will be the equivalent field of view of 24mm on a full frame camera. That is what the 2.0x crop means. I always estimated the GH2 crop the same way but technically in video mode it is 1.8x making your fov ~22mm on full frame. I interchange lenses and intercut the GH2 and GH3 without thinking about these differences much at all.

Thanks for the note, Swami. The reason I ask is that I'm one of those folks who agonize over that 2mm difference between 12mm and 14mm. To me that 2mm difference is everything, and to hear that it will be less wide (by even a little) is kinda stressing.

I've heard some complaints about it in the BMX/Skate/action sports world already, because lots of work is done with Fisheye lenses, and with the gh3 they now are (a little) less wide.

I can only see being bothered by 10% more crop in very specialized situations and like it was said earlier if wider than 24mm on FF is your goal then why the hell are you using a M4/3 camera? or you can get the great 7-14mm pana lens.

I love the GH3 over my GH2 in every single aspect.
